It wasn't always pretty, but Corona del Sol jumped ahead early and didn't look back in a 34-13 defeat of visiting Dobson in a Divsion I game Friday night.
The Aztecs (2-1) needed only two plays to get on the scoreboard thanks to James Contes. On the first play from scrimmage, Contes threw a 26-yard pass to Tevin Mayfield. That play set up Contes' 35-yard touchdown run on the very next snap.
Contes dominated the ground game for the Aztecs, finishing with 129 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries. Contes average 9.92 yards per carry.
"He's a good back," Corona coach Tom Joseph said. "He's as good as there is out there."
The Aztecs gained a total of 222 yards on the ground.
"We're going to have to use (Contes), but we've got tons of kids that can run," Joseph said. "Anybody can run in our offense and get lots of yards. That's the way it works."
The Aztecs, although somewhat sparingly, also went to the air, using both RJ Rhiner and Will Sorensen in place of starter Evan Kinney.
Rhiner and Sorensen combined to complete 6 of 11 passes for 67 yards.
"I told them I'd like to play them a half each during the week; that was the plan," Joseph said. "When Kinney gets back, they won't see much time. So I'm trying to get them in as much as they can now."
Dobson (0-3) did have its opportunities to get back in the game, but dropped interceptions and missed tackles allowed Corona to pull away.
"They were taking away some of the inside stuff," Joseph said. "They just started slanting everything inside, so we just started going outside."
The Mustangs also struggled on offense again. Falling behind big early in the second half forced Dobson to try out its aerial attack, but quarterback Gabe Martinez couldn't get in a rhythm.
Martinez finished 10 for 19 passing for 91 yards.
"They were very persistent," Joseph said. "It was a dogfight the first half."
Yaw Mensah once again proved to be the Mustangs' biggest offensive threat early in the game, but he was forced out of the equation due to Dobson having to go to the air to attempt to get back in the game.
Mensah finished with just 34 yards on only seven carries.
The Aztecs will have their hands full in the next couple of games as they look to build on back-to-back wins. Corona will visit Highland in Week 4 and then will travel to face defending state champion Desert Vista in Week 5.
"(Highland) is a good team," Joseph said. "It just doesn't get easier. And then DV. We've got Highland next week -- that's all I know."
Dobson will once again try to give new coach George De La Torre his first win when it travels to Skyline next Friday.
