It was homecoming at Campo Verde Friday night and there was a bit of an upset. It was not on the field – it was at halftime, as quarterback Luke Pineda lost out on homecoming king to senior kicker Alex Wells.
It was the about only blemish for Pineda, who played flawlessly in Campo Verde's 42-7 victory over Poston Butte in front of a standing-room only crowd in Gilbert.
Pineda was 24-30 for 280 yards and four touchdowns, adding a rushing touchdown and keeping plays alive with his feet all night.
"My line just did a great job blocking for me and my receivers were getting open when I was scrabbling," said Pineda. "They were just finding seams and I was finding whoever was open."
The senior signal caller completed passes to six different receivers on the night. Pineda's favorite target was senior wide receiver Jordan Fickas, who caught eight passes for 79 yards. Senior Jordan Sims caught six passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns.
"He is the cog that turns the wheel," Campo Verde coach Max Ragsdale said of Pineda. "He is a fantastic young man and I am happy he was able to win on senior night."
The game was scoreless after the first quarter, as the two teams traded punts and Campo Verde missed a 47-yard field goal early in the game. In the second quarter, the Coyote defense stopped Poston Butte on a fourth and goal from the Coyote 4 yard-line.
Campo Verde (8-1) took over and marched 96 yards for their first score of the game when Pineda found senior Erick Belcher for a 3-yard touchdown pass. Belcher caught seven passes for 82 yards and returned a punt for a touchdown in the second half.
The Coyote defense dominated the line of scrimmage, holding Poston Butte to just 28 rushing yards and sacking quarterback Russell Corriveau four times.
"They have played fantastic all year," said Ragsdale about his defense. "They're our calling card, coach (Ryan) Freeman has them flying around like crazy."
Up 21-0 in the third quarter, Campo Verde junior Erik Hildebrandt blocked a Poston Butte punt, setting the Coyotes up on the Broncos' 14 yard-line. Pineda capped the drive off with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Sims to put the Coyotes up 28-0. Poston Butte (3-6) got on the board in the third quarter with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Corriveau to junior Keyshawn Boyd to pull within 21, but the game was never in doubt.
The Coyotes have now four games in a row since a loss to Highland in late September; they finish the regular season next week on the road against Mesquite.
"It's nice to finish with two tough teams," said Ragsdale. "Next week is going to be a dogfight, there isn't much time to enjoy this one."
