Another week, another near miss for Red Mountain. And it doesn’t get any easier.

After leading at the half but turning the ball over at its 29 late, the Lions couldn’t rally against No. 4 Avondale Westview, losing 21-14 on Thursday night, keeping them out of the win column after three weeks.

“Probably the best 0-3 team around but we’re still 0-3,” said Red Mountain coach Ron Wisniewski. “Like I just told my team, we have to fight our way out of it.”

The Lions have lost their first three games by a total of 14 points. And the schedule for the next three weeks: at Brophy, a home game against Chaparral and at Desert Mountain.

On Thursday, after tying the game at 14 late in the third, Westview (3-0) looked like it had momentum. All-purpose back Jalen Johnson returned a punt 44 yards to the Red Mountain 32 with 10:49 remaining in the game.

But the Lions tried to take it back. Terrell Tyler intercepted an overthrown Westview pass in the end zone to give the Lions the ball back.

However, the Lions had trouble moving the ball all night outside of their first two possessions, which both ended in touchdowns. In the fourth, Red Mountain got a first down, but a holding penalty pushed them back and on second-and-11 at the 29, Adarian Limbs fumbled and Westview’s Desmond Washington recovered.

“They knew what we were trying to do, they understood that,” Wisniewski said. “They weren’t going to stop us with a 7-man box, we would have been able to continue to run the ball. They put their safeties right down in there, they did some things with their line. It made it so we had to get to the perimeter or throw the ball.

“We have not been able to make enough plays on the perimeter to scare people into playing and honest box (defense).”

It took six plays and the Knights had to overcome back-to-back penalties but Washington went left from the 7 to put Westview ahead 21-14 with 4:52 to play. Red Mountain got to the Westview 34 on the subsequent possession, but quarterback Brennen Dobson was sacked on successive plays and the Lions ended up punting the ball away with 2:12 left.

“We have to start making some big plays,” said Dobson. “That’s pretty much it.”

Westview ran off two minutes, Red Mountain got the ball back at its 34 but Dobson threw three incompletions in the final series.

“We have to keep working at it and we’ll get over the hump, we’ll get there,” Dobson said.

Red Mountain got off to a great start – taking the opening series 75 yards in 13 plays in more than six minutes, capped by a 1-yard run by Limbs. But Westview’s Johnson took the next play from scrimmage 70 yards for a tying score, bouncing off a few would-be tacklers and then racing down the left sideline.

After fumbling the ensuing kickoff, the Lions got the ball back with 3:31 left in the first and again mixed pass and run before stalling at the Westview 29. On fourth-and-13, Dobson found Sam Fink in the end zone on a picture-perfect touchdown and Red Mountain took a 14-7 lead into the break.
