Sophomore Mackenzie Popescue hurled her second perfect game of the year as Scottsdale Chaparral defeated Flagstaff 2-0 Thursday in the Softball Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City.

Popescue struck out 13 in seven innings and also knocked in the go-ahead run with a single in the sixth, scoring Kelsey Stander who hit a leadoff double.

Later in the day, Popescue (6-0) followed up that gem with a one-hit shutout, striking out 10 batters in seven innings of work as Chaparral (6-0) defeated Woodbridge, Calif., 1-0. Popescue also scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning when she tripled and scored on a hit by Caitlin Melnychenko.


Andrea Salazar tossed a one-hitter to lead Chandler (8-6) to a 2-0 win over visiting Mesa. Alex Bejarano had two hits and two RBIs for Chandler. ...

Ana Castillo doubled twice and had five RBIs to help Marcos de Niza (2-7-1) defeat host Barry Goldwater 13-3. ...

Mesquite tied the game with three runs in the sixth inning, then got the game-winner in the ninth to defeat host Dobson 5-4. Jena Specker scored the game-winning run on a fielder’s choice. Katie Dennis (5-2) pitched all nine innings for Mesquite (9-2), striking out eight and allowing only one earned run. ...

Desert Mountain’s Kristie McDannell hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to lift the Wolves (8-2) over host Mountain Pointe 6-5 in a 5A nonregion game. McDannell finished 3-for-4 with a triple, a home run and three RBIs. Mountain Pointe threatened in the bottom of the seventh, getting the tying run to third base and the winning run to second. But Arielle Cano’s line drive to shortstop was caught to end the game. ...

Marissa Smith hit a three-run homer and threw a complete game to lead Arcadia (7-2-1) to a 7-3 win over visiting Saguaro. Erika Kiel drove in two runs for the Titans. Christina Zavala had two hits and two RBIs for the Sabercats.


Ian Welsch had 11 digs to lead Basha over visiting St. Mary’s, 25-14, 25-12, 25-14. Tommy Hoke added 20 assists, eight kills and five blocks for Basha (5-3). ...

Justin Peterson had 33 assists, Jessie Noble added 14 kills and Louis Lira had 10 kills as Westwood defeated visiting Gilbert 26-28, 25-12, 25-23, 25-11. ...

Clayson Barlow and Gavin Tanner each had 13 kills as Highland (3-1) beat Corona del Sol (5-4) 25-23, 24-26, 25-16, 29-27 at home. Jackson Law added 30 assists for the Hawks. Steven Harmon had 12 kills and Sutton Demlong 31 assists for the Aztecs.


Bryan Dunlavey pitched a five-inning no-hitter while striking out eight as Coronado (7-2) dominated Washington (2-5) 18-0 on the road. Cody Fortney and Joe Jacobson drove in three runs apiece. ...

Casey Litle had two hits and two RBIs as Chaparral (6-2) downed Sunnyslope, 3-2, in a 4A non-region matchup. ...

Wes Kipley hit a two-run walk-off home run in the eighth inning as Desert Mountain defeated visiting Mountain Pointe, 13-12, in 5A non-region action. The Desert Mountain rally began in the seventh inning as the Wolves erased a five-run deficit with a three-run home run by Skylar Helmbeck and a two-run homer by pitcher Brad Douthit to tie the game at 11. Austin Wooldridge had a solo home run in the top of the eighth to put Mountain Pointe up by a run. Douthit was 3-for-4 and also earned the victory for the Wolves (6-1) and teammate Kipley finished 4-for-5. David Darnell had two home runs and four RBIs for the Pride....

Ryan Downs tied the game with a bases-loaded triple in the bottom of the sixth inning, then scored the game-winning run on an error as host Basha downed Gilbert, 8-7. ...

Scott McGaughey only allowed two hits and struck out 12 to lead Dobson over Mesquite, 2-1. Brandon Holdridge had two doubles and two RBIs for the Mustangs (3-5). ...

Todd Wooten had two hits, including the game-winning RBI in the sixth, as Mountain View (6-2) won at Sunrise Mountain (4-3) 6-5. Matt Shannon overcame four unearned runs in the first to get the win. ...


Larissa Matthews edged out defending state champion and teammate Micsha Carson, in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.01 seconds as Chandler dominated St. Mary’s, 120-20.


Desert Vista’s Steve Figueroa set a school record with a shot put of 53 feet, 10 inches as the Thunder defeated Mountain View, 90-51. The previous record of 52-9 was set in 1999. Luke Matthews also set a school record in the triple jump for Desert Vista with a leap of 46 feet, 6 inches.
