Prep Highlights: Turner leads Corona’s rout of Mesquite

Kevin Turner had a hat trick in the first half to lead Tempe Corona del Sol to a 7-1 victory over Gilbert Mesquite in boys soccer action at the Tempe Diablos Classic at the Tempe Sports Complex on Monday.

Austin Haas, Trevor Allen, Austin Vanderbur and Marc Jerde scored the other goals for the Aztecs (3-0). Michael Tapia assisted on two of Turner’s goals.

Corona goalkeeper Matt Bersano stopped 11 of Mesquite’s 12 shots on goal.


Allen Puga scored all of Highland’s goals to lead the Hawks to a 4-1 victory over Dobson in the Tempe Diablos Classic at Tempe Sports Complex. Puga scored two goals in each half for Highland (3-0). Ben Messer scored for the Mustangs (1-2).

Gilbert used three second-half goals to storm past Mountain View 4-1 in the Tempe Diablos Classic. Ryan Furetsch had two goals for the Tigers (2-0). Brad Mason and David Urbina added the other Gilbert goals. Joe Worth scored for the Toros (0-3).

Jesus Leyva netted two goals in Chandler’s 5-0 win over Desert Mountain in the opening round of the Tempe Diablos Classic. Jovanny Aceves, Derek Conti, and Guillermo Valdez each added a goal for the Wolves (2-0). Ryen Helzer boosted his shutout streak to two games, recording one save for the win.

In a non-tournament game, Scottsdale Christian goalkeeper Austin Plott stopped 15 shots to lead the Eagles to a 2-0 victory over visiting Arizona Lutheran. Matt Taylor and Jacob Storrer each scored a goal for Scottsdale Christian (1-2).


Gilbert defeated Mountain View 1-0 in its first game of pool play in the Tempe Diablos Classic at Tempe Sports Complex. Lindsay Benitez scored a first-half goal to give the Tigers (3-0) the victory. Kali Harmon recorded five saves and continued Gilbert’s shutout streak to three games to begin the season.

After ending regulation in a scoreless tie, Highland defeated Dobson 6-5 in a shootout to win its first pool game of the Tempe Diablos Classic. Gretchen Kulick’s goal for the Hawks ended the marathon shootout.


Devirous Johnson scored a game-high 24 points in Chandler’s 89-40 rout of visiting Alhambra. Johnson also grabbed 12 rebounds. Tyler Jones and Mike Dunn added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Wolves (6-3).


Desert Mountain’s Monique Machiz and Stephanie Douthit scored 19 points apiece to lead the Wolves to a 60-31 win over Yuma Cibola at Scottsdale. Douthit also grabbed 13 rebounds and dished out 5 assists in a game Desert Mountain (5-3) never trailed.

Amy Frost’s 16 points and Kirsten Johannsen’s 11 helped Chandler Valley Christian defeat Maricopa 63-27 at Chandler. Brittany Parks led the Rams (0-3) with 15 points, despite the fact Valley Christian held Maricopa to single digits in all four quarters.
