The fifth-seeded Notre Dame Saints made quick work of No. 12 Palo Verde at home with their 12-2 victory in five innings to begin the 4A Division II baseball state tournament on Saturday.
Taylor Scott earned the win with one run allowed in four innings, but his hitting contributions loomed large with three hits, including two home runs. Ryan Scott went 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs, while Joey Luvici and Greg Hopkins both had two hits and an RBI.
Notre Dame advances to the second round to take on No. 13 Mingus at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Peoria Sports Complex.
In other 4A-II state tournament action, No. 3 Williams Field made it into the second round thanks to its 6-3 victory over visiting No. 14 Desert Edge. The Black Hawks will play No. 6 Catalina at 4 p.m. on Wednesday at Surprise Baseball Stadium.
No. 9 Arcadia fell just short of making it out of the first round as it fell 2-1 on the road to No. 8 Liberty in eight innings. Liberty moves on to play No. 1 Thunderbird at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Peoria Sports Complex.
The No. 14 Queen Creek Bulldogs saw their postseason run come to a quick end as they lost their first round game 17-5 in five innings on the road to No. 3 Prescott. The Badgers will play No. 11 Catalina in the second round at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Camelback Ranch Glendale Stadium.
