Prep Highlights: Mesa’s Fuller scores 46 points in victory

Senior Aaron Fuller scored 46 points and pulled down 16 rebounds as the Mesa boys basketball team beat Mesa Westwood 75-49 in a 5A-I East Valley Region game on Tuesday at Mesa.

Fuller is averaging 40 points and 16.7 rebounds per game over his past three games.

Donte Medder added 10 points for the Jackrabbits (10-7, 2-0).

Kenny O’Bannon led the Warriors (13-8, 0-3) with 18 points and Alex Miller added 11.

Fuller and his Mesa teammates play a much-anticipated game against Phoenix Pinnacle and ASU-bound Taylor Rohde on Monday in the MLK Basketball Classic.


Deonte Roberts lead all scorers with 14 points as Red Mountain beat visiting Dobson 55-53 in a 5A-I East Valley Region game. Keawe Enos scored 13 and Paul Newendyke added 11 for the Mountain Lions. Taylor Johnson led Dobson with 14 points and Melvin Douglas and Patrick Wolf each had 13 points.

Daniel Johnson had 22 points, six rebounds and seven steals in host Marcos de Niza’s (8-9, 1-1) 88-63 win over Mountain Pointe (3-14). Ryan Bawek also had 22 points to go along with seven rebounds for the Padres. Michael Ramirez led the Pride with 21 points.

Kyle Smith poured in 29 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to lead host Desert Mountain (12-7) over Mountain View 64-59.

Danny Franz added 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolves. Brendon Lavender led the Toros with 22 points in defeat.

Charles Ward led all scorers with 33 points as host Arcadia beat Higley 71-62 in a 4A-II East Sky Region game. Chase Boyd put in a strong effort for the Knights with 26 points as did Taylor Jackson with 22 points.

Freshman Jordan Baker had a game-high 24 points including 18 in the second half and was 8 of 9 from the free-throw line as host Tempe (10-12, 2-4) routed Queen Creek (6-14, 1-6) 70-50 in a 4A- II East Sky Region game. Erik Battle added 15 points for the Buffaloes and Bernis Berber had eight points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Luke Miller led the Bulldogs with 19 points.

Nate Bohy had 34 points and Cortez Higgins added 21 points as host Desert Ridge defeated Skyline 85-71 in a 5A-II Pima Region game. J.C. Hall led Skyline with 23 points followed by Andy Andaverde with 18 points.

Host Basha defeated Mountain Ridge 61-37 behind Tyler Miller’s 10th double-double of the season. Miller had 11 points and 11 rebounds, Blake Nash had a game-high 14 points, and Nick Markovich had 13 points for the Bears (12-5).


Brandon Norem continued his torrid scoring pace with two goals as Arcadia beat Tempe (3-5, 0-3) 3-0 in a 4A-II East Sky Region match. Norem scored twice and has 24 on the season in just eight games for the Titans (7-1, 3-1). Jacob Fishman added the third goal for the Titans.

Brad Mason scored two goals and host Gilbert defeated Mesquite (6-11, 1-4) 3-0 in a 5A-I Fiesta Region match. Storm Lilly added a goal for the Tigers (11-6, 3-3) and J.J. Meier made three saves to preserve the team’s eighth shutout.

Chaparral scored three first-half goals, all by Tyler Niknam, as the visiting Firebirds beat Saguaro 4-0 in a 4A-I Desert Sky region game. Alex Bender scored the fourth goal for the Firebirds (9-4, 3-0) and Chip Cox made eight saves to shutout the Sabercats (0-10-1, 0-2-1).

Finlay O’Niell scored all four goals to lead Highland (13-3, 5-0) over Pinnacle at home.


Ariel Cook scored three goals, all in the first half, as Gilbert beat host Mesquite 4-1 in a 5A-I Fiesta Region match. Sam Conrad added the fourth goal for the Tigers (14-4-1, 5-1).


Amy Frost scored 25 points to lead Valley Christian (18-3, 5-1) over North Pointe Prep (5-15, 0-5) 75-24 on the road. Alaina Bergsma added 10 points and 13 rebounds for the Trojans in the victory.

Robyn Robledo scored 18 points and Liberty Brittain added 16 as Tempe Prep (15-7, 7-0) rolled by host Thunderbird Academy 56-19. Kelly Gilloon led the Knights in rebounding with nine.

Chaparral defeated visiting Apache Junction 71-41 in a 4A-I Desert Sky Region game. Sam Russell led the Firebirds with 34 points and 20 rebounds.

McClintock had two players finish with double-doubles in its 67-37 rout of visiting Saguaro in a 4A-I Desert Sky Region game.

Amy Patton scored 14 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for the Chargers (16-3, 5-1). Ariana Arnold added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Kirstyn Shaw and Aley Rohde each scored 16 points and Pinnacle beat Horizon 75-31 in a 5A-II Pima Region game. Kacie Donovan added 13 points and Victoria Sheaffer had 12 for the Pioneers (20-2, 3-0). Jennifer Lee led Horizon with 12 points.

Kt Graham scored 26 points to help host Queen Creek (15-6) beat Tempe 62-52. Jamie Kottcamp added 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Desert Vista shot 37 shots from the free-throw line, making only 17, but it was enough to help defeat host Gilbert 52-49 in overtime. With her team down by two points, the Thunder’s Patricia Bright hit a game-tying shot with five seconds left in regulation. Alexis Gannis led the Thunder with 16 points and Justine Johnson scored 17 to lead the Tigers (17-3, 2-0).

Mesa’s Lexi Brown scored 11 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out six assists as the Jackrabbits beat host Westwood 47-38 in a 5A-I East Valley Region game.
