Mountain View had some plays get away, but it held on and didn’t let the game get away.

The Toros, in their season opener at Anthem Boulder Creek, hung on for a 24-19 victory over the Jaguars Friday.

“I’m very happy to get a win, but we missed so many plays,” said Mountain View coach Chad DeGrenier. “That’s unacceptable.

“I’m glad we’re 1-0 and it’s easier to learn from mistakes after a win than after a loss.”

Mountain View appeared to be in charge most of the game, but couldn’t put away the Jaguars until the final play.

It took an interception at the goal line on fourth-and-18 from the Toro 25-yard line by senior defensive back Hansen Williams to seal the win.

Boulder Creek (0-1) reached the Toro 17 after making a fourth-and-12 conversion on a pass from Trevor Miller to Brett Benson, but, on third-and-10, Mountain View linebacker Erick Eckstein sacked Miller at the 25. Williams intercepted the next play with eight seconds left.

It was 24-13 Mountain View leading when, on a fourth-and-2 from the Toros' 26, Ryan Parenteau broke free for a 26-yard touchdown run with 4:46 to go. The Jaguars recovered the ensuing onside kick before stalling with the game-ending pick.

“We have a lot to work on,” added DeGrenier, reiterating he was still glad to be 1-0. “We missed a big post play that was wide open and our defense didn’t wrap up. They had three plays over 50 yards. We expect to throw and catch and expect to run the ball, we missed some throws and dropped some balls in the second half.”

Mountain View jumped out early. Quarterback John Clark went 4-for-4 for 29 yards on the game’s opening drive, before versatile backup Chase Funk entered and finished the series with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Jason Hall. Boulder Creek answered with a 49-yard screen pass up the middle from Miller to Parenteau on third-and-4 to tie it.

Clark got the offense going again by connecting on 3 of 3 passes on the next series before Funk re-entered inside the 20 to take over with a pair of solid runs. The drive ended with Nielson scoring from 1-yard out to give the Toros a 13-7 lead with 11:02 left in the half.

After a quick three-and-out, the Toros looked to be on their way to pulling away from the Jags, but Clark Brown couldn’t hang on to a deep pass that looked certain to get them six more points. The drive stalled inside the 10 and MV settled for a Luis Bustillos 22-yard field goal.

Boulder Creek scored again when backup quarterback Gunther Johnson scored on an 8-yard run, again on third down.

Another missed pass play on the final drive of the half and a penalty, forced Bustillos to drive a 42-yard field goal, which fell short.

In spite of a couple tough plays, Clark finished the half 11-of-16 for 153 yards.

Looking to start the second half with some momentum. Mountain View recovered its onside kick, but a holding penalty and an incomplete pass on third and long, forced the Toros to punt for the first time.

“In the first half, we did mostly what we wanted, but we missed some big plays,” said Clark. “We didn’t do as well as we wanted, but we’re 1-0. We’ll have to work harder this week than last week and then work harder the week after that.”
