Desert Edge boys basketball coach Joe Babinski has been hired to replace Mark Nold at Perry, Chandler district spokesman Terry Locke said in an email.

Babinski has 575 career victories and led Desert Edge to the 5A division II state championship in 2008.  He coached the Scorpions for the past seven years, amassing a record of 144-56 and reaching the semifinals three times.

Nold resigned to take over as the athletic director and basketball coach at Arizona College Prep. Goodyear Estrella Foothills coach Ty Amundsen was originally offered the job but he turned it down. Perry went 21-9 last season and advanced to the Division I quarterfinals.

The move will become official once the school district approves the move on Wednesday.
