There comes a time in many people's lives when they are faced with an unexpected challenge.

Such was the case for Highland tailback Ray Barry who suddenly found himself in the starter’s role.

Barry rose to the occasion and recorded 154 yards on 17 carries in Highland’s 28-0 homecoming win over Skyline in a Division I, Section II game.

“Barry is a young man who has been in our program for four years and has not had much of a chance to contribute,” said Highland coach Pete Wahlheim. “Tonight he stepped up.”

Before he had the chance to embrace his challenge, Barry and the Hawks (4-2, 3-2) had to overcome what Walheim called a “hangover” from their highly emotional 21-17 loss to Basha last week. In the game’s first six minutes the teams combined for five penalties, two fumbles, and two punts.

With four minutes left in the first, Barry took right sweep 35 yards for a touchdown, which gave Highland a 7-0 lead.

“I just had to believe,” Barry said of his performance. “I wanted to do it for my teammates.”

After Barry’s run, the Hawks shook off their hangover and dominated both sides of the ball.

Highland extended its lead to 14-0 on an 8-yard run by Grant Gale.

“We had a lot of distraction this week,” Walheim said. “It took us a while to get over it.”

Early in the second half, Barry had a 49-yard run that appeared to be a touchdown. Officials called him out of bounds on the 1-yard-line. On the next play Hunter Clancy dove for a touchdown, which gave the Hawks a 21-0 lead.

After a Skyline (2-3) three-and-out, Highland went on a 13-play, eight-minute drive that culminated in an 8-yard pass from Blake Young to Colin Gardner.
