Prep highlights: Basha knocks off top-ranked Mountain View

Chandler Basha used a balanced effort to upset visiting and top-ranked Mesa Mountain View 55-42 in a 5A nonregion boys basketball game Friday night.

Brelan Berry, Tyler Miller and Blake Nash each scored 14 points to lead the Bears (5-3) to victory. Berry, a 6-foot-8 sophopmore, added eight rebounds and five blocked shots, while Nash dished out eight assists.

The Toros’ (5-1) loss was their first of the season. It was also the first loss they have suffered in their last 12 games, dating back to last year.


Valley Christian dropped their pool-play finale 56-36 to Chinle, but bounced back to beat Hopi 66-37 in the quarterfinals of the Flagstaff Pepsi Tournament.

Morgan Wohltman hit two crucial free throws down one with two seconds left as Highland (11-0) narrowly escaped defeat, 52-51, against visiting Corona del Sol (0-5). …

Amy Patton had 14 points and 10 rebounds as host McClintock beat Apache Junction 79-31 in a 4A-I Desert Sky Region game. …

Seton Catholic defeated host Tempe 57-47 in a 4A-II East Sky Region game.


Matt Rhodes scored 21 points and Steven Morin added 17 as Saguaro beat visiting Phoenix Shadow Mountain 77-58. …

John Bailey scored 22 points and collected 11 rebounds as host Dobson beat Mountain Pointe 89-71. …

John Jackson had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds as host Hamilton (4-0) edged Laveen Cesar Chavez 64-59. …

Deonte Roberts had 19 points as host Red Mountain beat Phoenix Barry Goldwater 62-45 in a 5A-I nonregion game. …

Eli Godinaz and Devirous Johnson each had a double-double to help Chandler (8-3) defeat visiting Horizon (4-2) 71-65. …

Jake LeBeau’s buzzer-beating layup lifted Tempe Prep over visiting Veritas 63-61. Manny Sandoval led the Knights (5-4) with 26 points . …

Erik Battle scored 25 and 28 points, respectively, leading Tempe High to a 72-53 victory over Coolidge and a 65-56 win over Tucson Rio Rico in the Coolidge Invitational...

Matt Carlino led visiting Highland past Corona del Sol 68-65 in a 5A-I nonregion game. Carlino finished the game with 19 points.


Higley advanced to the championship game of the Moon Valley Invitational at Freedom Park in Avondale with a 2-1 win over Peoria Centennial. Sam Roberts and Carissa LaFevers each scored a goal for the Knights (6-0-1).


Phoenix St. Mary’s has hired Mike Collins as its baseball coach. Collins has been a club-level coach for most of his 33 years in coaching.
