First-round intrigues include No. 12 Mesa at No. 5 Corona del Sol, No. 10 Desert Vista at No. 7 Mountain Pointe in 5A-I. The 5A-II level features No. 8 Chaparral hosting No. 9 Perry. No. 8 Queen Creek gets No. 9 Copper Canyon in 4A-I and No. 8 Scottsdale Christian faces No. 9 Wickenburg.
State tournaments begin for the girls Wednesday. For all 5A schools the higher seed will be the home team for the first two rounds (Wednesday-Saturday for 5A-I, Wednesday-Friday for 5A-II).
The 4A schools will play at the higher seed on Wednesday, then second-round matchups are at Red Mountain Park (Friday night for 4A-II, late Saturday afternoon for 4A-I). The 3A/2A/1A begin Tuesday and continue with quarterfinals early Saturday afternoon.
All of those matches this week are at Red Mountain Park. In 5A-I, No. 10 Mesquite and No. 7 Red Mountain, as well as No. 15 Corona del Sol vs. No. 2 Gilbert should be interesting. No. 11 Pinnacle and No. 6 Marcos de Niza highlight 5A-II matchups, as does No. 6 Queen Creek vs. No. 11 Sabino in 4A-I. No. 14 Williams Field vs. No. 3 Arcadia and No. 9 Notre Dame vs. No. 8 Palo Verde highlight the 4A-II bracket. No. 4 Valley Christian gets a first-round bye and won’t play until Saturday afternoon.
Two of three schools tied for first in the 5A Fiesta Region tangle Tuesday night when Hamilton visits Chandler High. Fourth-ranked Hamilton), Chandler and Xavier are all 5-1 in region play to date.
On Thursday night Mountain View and fifth-ranked Highland, in pursuit of Gilbert High for the top spot in the 5A Central, meet in a 6 p.m. start at Highland, Mountain View is 6-3 and Highland is 6-2. On Friday night Highland is back at it visiting Dobson (5-3), which also is trying to catch Gilbert (8-1).
There aren’t too many marquee matchups this week, but there are plenty of important games with many of the region titles up for grabs.
On Tuesday, Desert Ridge is at Mountain Pointe, Basha plays at Dobson, Horizon is at St. Mary’s and Pinnacle hosts Chaparral.
On Friday, Chaparral takes on St. Mary’s, as the Knights are in a fight to make the 5A-I postseason after winning the title last year. Other games of note include Hamilton at Brophy, Basha at Corona del Sol and Arcadia at Williams Field.
It’s region time in 4A. The 4A-II East Sky Region (Coronado, Higley, Maricopa, Notre Dame, Seton, Tempe and Williams Field) will get together on Saturday at Tempe High, while the 4A-I Desert Sky Region (Apache Junction, Cactus Shadows, Campo Verde, Combs, McClintock, Poston Butte, Queen Creek and Saguaro) will hold its meet at Apache Junction.
In the East Sky, the team favorites are Coronado and Williams Filed, while in the Desert Sky, Apache Junction and Queen Creek are the favorites. The 5A teams will have dual meets on Wednesday and sectionals are Feb. 12 and 13.
