Thursday roundup: Hamilton falls in Nike

Devon Alonzo and Brianna Brown each scored 19 points for Hamilton, but the Huskies (10-4) couldn’t overcome 24 turnovers and fell to East Lake (Calif.), 68-58, in the semifinals of the Nike Tournament of Champions Wednesday at Basha High School.

Hamilton pulled to within four at the end of the third quarter, but East Lake answered with a 24-point outburst in the fourth.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Aria Krumwiede led all scorers with 21 points and Sam Russell recorded her seventh consecutive double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds in Chaparral’s 47-42 win over Valley Christian in the Nike Tournament of Champions at Basha High.… Kelly Tweito scored 14 points and Megan Haugo added 13 as Saguaro defeated Mountain Pointe, 53-39, in the Nike tournament.… Dominique Whitmore scored 18 points to help host Seton Catholic (6-7, 0-1) cruise by Coronado, 61-35. Taritha Williams scored a game-high 20 points for Coronado (3-8).

BOYS SOCCER

Higley opened the Mesa Jackrabbits Tournament with a loss and a tie in pool play, losing to Phoenix Thunderbird, 4-3, and tying Phoenix Washington, 1-1. Denis Matic, Pedro Rios and David Yitts each scored in the opener for the Knights (1-4-1). Spencer Hon scored the equalizer off a Sergio Chavez assist in the 75th minute of Higley’s 1-1 draw with Washington.… Edher Perez scored on a Francisco Arredondo assist in Coronado’s 1-1 tie with Avondale Agua Fria, and the Dons (3-3-1) finished the first day of Mesa pool play 1-0-1. In Coronado’s tourney opener, Arredondo scored two goals to lift the Dons over Saguaro, 2-1. In Saguaro’s second game, the Sabercats fell to Casa Grande, 4-0.…

In other Mesa Jackrabbits Tournament action, Mesa beat Glendale Sandra Day O’Connor, 4-0; Yuma Kofa downed Westwood, 2-0; Skyline and Tolleson tied 0-0; and Desert Ridge fell to Phoenix Alhambra, 6-2.
