VX Roundup 3/30: Corona, Mtn. Pointe, Mesquite win in baseball

Corona del Sol shut out Mesa 11-0 on the road in a Division I, non-sectional baseball game Friday that went five innings.

Kyle Jorgensen went 3-for-3 with a double, two home runs and four RBIs for the Aztecs (14-5).

Josh Ethier hit a two-run home run and Jeff Carter collected two hits and an RBI for Corona.

Nathan Birecki pitched three innings to earn the victory and improve to 4-0 on the season.

In other baseball action, Desert Vista defeated host-Maricopa, 10-0, in a non-division game. Drew Cutchall had three hits and two RBIs for the Thunder. Aaron Modi had a double and an RBI, and Tyler Adams went 2-for-3 with a double. Sean McGuire pitched six innings to get the win.

Mountain Pointe beat Brophy, 8-2, at home in a Division I, Section III game to improve to 10-7-1 on the season. Zach Cordova pitched a complete game, giving up six hits and two runs to improve to 3-0. At the plate, the Pride were led by Scott Kingery and Joey Curletta. Kingery had a double, home run and two RBIs. Curletta knocked in three runs on a home run in the fourth inning. David Graybill had two hits for Brophy, including a leadoff home run to start the game. Nick Jewett went 2-for-3 with a double and home run.

Michael Jacobo did it all for Skyline in its 8-5 win over visiting-Desert Ridge in a Division I, Section II game. Jacobo picked up the win and also had three RBI for the Coyotes.

Mesquite used a big seventh inning to run away with a 12-3 road win over McClintock in a Division I, non-sectional game. Garrett Jeffries went 3-for-4 with two double and three RBIs for the Wildcats (15-4). Bread Holland knocked in three runs and Seth Fretheim reached base four times. Dylan Rana picked up the win to improve to 3-0. Craig McGinnis had two hits for the Chargers.

Softball

Saguaro held on for a 2-0 win over visiting Notre Dame in a Division II, non-sectional game. Dana Morris and Elsie Oldham each collected two hits for the Sabrecats.

Morris had a triple and scored two runs. Oldham had two RBI to go with her pair of hits. Annie Davis earned the win and improved to 11-6 on the year.

Desert Vista took care of business at home with its 14-2 win over Maricopa in a non-division game. Rebecca Perez and Naomi Ricciotti each had three hits and three RBI for the Thunder. Sierra Ullrich added two hits and three RBI for Desert Visita. Danielle Block got the win to improve to 9-8 on the season.
