Gilbert Surrey Garden advanced to the second round of the 1A state boys basketball tournament with an easy 91-68 win over Clifton on Wednesday at Bradshaw Mountain High School in Prescott Valley.
It was a balanced attack for Surrey Garden as five Knights (24-3) scored in double figures. Brothers Dillon and Travis Currier scored 23 and 20 points, respectively. Jeremy Hebdon added 19, Ben Waggoner had 16 and Cole Normoyle contributed 10 points. Surrey Garden will play Patagonia at 6 p.m. today at Prescott High School.
DUNCAN 48, SALT RIVER 43: Salt River got 23 points from Anthony Dean but fell in the first round to the Wildkats. Taylor Kufrovich added 13 points for the Eagles (16-15).
In other games: Heber Mogollon beat St. David, 69-49; Pima beat Mayer Orme, 54-42; Tucson St. Gregory beat Fredonia 75-36; Fort Thomas beat Phoenix Valley Lutheran 50-46; Patagonia beat Williams 58-39; and Elfrida Valley Union beat Rock Point, 55-40.
PARKER 70, COOLIDGE 59: Coolidge’s Vincent Ellis had 19 points and Brad Jackson added 16, but Parker used a strong fourth quarter to eliminate the Bears (16-13) in the first round at Northern Arizona’s Walkup Skydome. The Broncs (17-13) outscored the Bears 26-15 in the final period.
Angelo Bottley added 10 points for Coolidge.
In other games: Safford beat Eagar Round Valley, 77-47.
In first-round games: Kayenta Monument Valley beat Snowflake, 64-48, and Safford defeated Parker, 54-53.
SURREY GARDEN 51, PIMA 49: At Prescott Valley Bradshaw Mountain High, Surrey Garden got 17 points from Amanda Martin and outscored Pima 14-3 in the fourth quarter to advance to the quarterfinals. Jenna Pearson added 15 points, eight rebounds and five steals, while Abby Young finished with 12 points. The Knights will play Rock Point at 3 p.m. today at Bradshaw Mountain High.
DUNCAN 43, TEMPE PREP 42: Tempe Prep’s season ended when it was unable to hang onto a 35-33 fourth-quarter lead and fell to Duncan at Bradshaw Mountain High. Liberty Brittain led the way for the Knights (21-10) with 13 points, while Robyn Robledo added 10 points.
In other games: Fredonia beat Gila Bend, 63-29; Bowie/San Simon beat Salome, 37-32; St. David beat St. Michael, 57-34; Rock Point beat St. Gregory, 44-36; Williams beat Valley Union, 56-32; and Fort Thomas beat Phoenix Day School for the Deaf, 56-29.
