Prep Highlights: Aztecs power past Chargers

The Tempe Corona del Sol baseball team didn’t waste any time getting its offense on track Tuesday.

The second-ranked Aztecs scored 10 runs in the first inning and went on to slam 23 hits in burying Tempe McClintock 21-5 in the McClintock-Saguaro Spring Break Tournament at McClintock High School.

Mike Felton, Justin Klett and Chris Lopez each knocked in two runs in the first-inning outburst. Lopez’s RBIs came courtesy of a two-run homer.

Felton finished 3-for-3 with a single and two doubles. Evan Ritchey and Aaron Foshie added three hits and four RBIs apiece. Aztecs starter Brock Abbadini got the victory, working two innings and recording five strikeouts.

Mark Anderson had two hits for the Chargers (7-7) and Parker Marshall added a two-run homer.


Josh Chapman tossed a three-hit shutout to lead Saguaro to an 11-0, five-inning win over Phoenix Camelback in the McClintock-Saguaro tournament at Saguaro. Chapman walked one and struck out five.

In another McClintock-Saguaro game, Mountain Pointe beat Queen Creek 12-3 at McClintock to remain undefeated (3-0) in the tournament. Tyler Studt got his first win of the year and Brayden Falk went 4-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs for the Pride (9-4).

Host Skyline beat Phoenix South Mountain 10-0 in six innings in a 5A-II nonregion game. The Coyotes (4-3) scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game. Miguel Gonzalez improved his record to 3-0 with a complete game. Kyle Lewis, Kyle Schoonover and Marco Garcia each had a double for Skyline.

Jake Barrett struck out 10 and walked two in a complete-game effort for Desert Ridge (11-1) in a 6-1 victory at San Luis.

Stephen Bryan threw a complete game and Westwood banged out 18 hits in a 10-5 victory over host Casa Grande. Daniel Zapata went 4-for-4 with three doubles, a stolen base and two RBIs while Steven Esparza was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Ben Ochoa was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Warriors (6-2).

Chris Wert and Jordan Adair both pitched strong games, then turned around and helped Mesa beat Phoenix Goldwater 6-3 with their bats. Wert pitched six innings, allowing three runs and went 2-for-4 at the plate. Adair went 2-for-4 with a bases-loaded triple and a two-run triple, then came on in the seventh to earn the save for the Jackrabbits (4-6).

Broc Tooher pitched 6 2/3 innings and struck out five in Higley’s 11-7 victory over host Paradise Valley. Joe Robinson hit two doubles in one inning for the Knights, while Jordan Dee hit a two-run home run for the Trojans.

John Wilkinson drove in Jake Williams with a single to give Brophy a 2-1 victory over visiting Yuma Kofa. Drew Maggi pitched the seventh to earn his second win. Trent Stevenson started for Brophy (6-3) and pitched five innings, striking out seven batters. Stevenson also went 3-for-4.


Sara Sandoval hit for the cycle, scored three times and drove in four during Mesa’s 23-2 rout of Phoenix Goldwater. Shantele Turley (4-for-4) and Chelsey Jensen (3-for-3) each had four RBIs for the host Jackrabbits (8-3).

Hamilton handed Mountain Pointe its first loss, 6-5, in the McClintock-Marcos de Niza Tournament at Marcos de Niza. Despite the loss, Mountain Pointe (12-5) will play Xavier today at 2 p.m. at McClintock in the tournament’s championship game.

Host Skyline (4-3-1) defeated Phoenix South Mountain 14-3 in five innings in a 5A-II nonregion game. Jessica Leonard pitched a one-hitter for her third win of the season. Vanessa Villar went 4-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Jenny Willis had four stolen bases.


Mele Iongi (6-0, 6-0) and Emma Lacavelier (6-1, 6-1) each won in singles and later teamed to win in doubles (8-0) for host Mountain View in a 9-0 win over Dobson.

Westwood defeated visiting Yuma 7-2 despite dropping its first two singles matches and its first doubles match. The Warriors’ other players stepped up to lead the team to victory, with Monica Vainauskas and Tajehra Ochoa winning their singles matches and then teaming up to win in doubles.

Mesquite used its win in the final doubles match to get a 5-4 victory over host Highland. Samantha Tangen and Erica Faccone defeated Highland’s Hayley Roby and Alli Blackburn, 9-7, to give the Wildcats the decisive victory.


Justin Artis (6-2, 6-0) and Shannon Nelson (6-4, 7-5) each won in singles and later teamed to win in doubles (8-1) for Hamilton in a 6-3 win at Chandler in a Fiesta Region matchup.

Junior Josh Caldwell won both his singles and doubles matches, dropping only one game combined as host Westwood defeated Yuma 8-1.

Nate Paulson (6-0, 6-0) and Kevin Kienetz (6-0, 6-0) each won in singles and later teamed to win in doubles (8-1) to lead Red Mountain to a 9-0 win at Mesa.
