Teams to watch

Desert Vista girls: There is some some high-end talent and great depth should have the Thunder in the running for the state championship. Recently won the star-studded Wolves Invitational over Xavier and Pinnacle.

Xavier: The Gators have captured 15 consecutive state championships but another one is in serious jeopardy with Desert Vista and Pinnacle nipping at their heels. The team’s young swimmers must grow up quickly.

Pinnacle girls: The Pioneers might have the best collection of elite swimmers in the East Valley. If the team’s second tier can perform well at the state meet, Pinnacle has a shot at the title.

Brophy boys: Brophy loses some elite talent, but not surprisingly, has plenty more waiting in the wings. The Broncos are the deepest boys team in the state and are looking to keep alive a title streak that dates back to 1988.

Desert Vista boys: The Thunder seem like the biggest threat to the Brophy throne. Desert Vista has good depth and could give put a scare into Brophy at state.

Swimmers/divers to watch

Victoria Toris, Jr. Pinnacle: Toris won the 50- and 100-freestyle Division I state championships last season as a sophomore and seems poised to repeat in both events.

Mark Jurek, So., Chandler: The No. 1-ranked 15-year-old in the country should be a contender in the 100 butterfly and 400 IM at the state meet.

Jack Blake, Fr., Brophy: Young sensation burst onto the scene with victories in the 50- and 100-freestyle at the stacked Wolves Invitational last weekend.

Isabel Whited, So., Pinnacle: Won the 500 freestyle and finished second in the 200 freestyle as a freshman. Should battle for both titles again.

Kyle Ewoldt, Jr., Highland: The Hawks’ top boys swimmer finished in second place last year in the 200 IM and excels at the 500 freestyle and 100 butterfly as well.

Kyra Tatlow, Sr., Westwood: Tatlow won the Division I diving title a season ago and should be the favorite again.
