After getting off to a slow start, No. 2 Highland turned it on after the first quarter, and cruised to a 67-29 win over No. 15 Sierra Vista Buena on Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Division I girls basketball state tournament.
The Hawks, led in scoring by Jordan Hagen's 21 points, used a 24-6 second quarter to turn a three-point lead to a 21-point lead and never looked back.
With the victory, Highland will square off against No. 7 Dobson for a fourth time this season on Monday. The game will be played at Wells Fargo Arena starting at approximately 6 p.m., the third of four quarterfinals played Monday at Arizona State.
No. 8 Chandler had no problem taking care of visiting No. 9 Avondale Westview and defeateed the Knights, 69-38.
The Wolves will face No. 1 Mountain View in a quarterfinals game at Wells Fargo Arena on Monday at approximately 7:45 p.m.
Division II
Playing at home, No. 1 Saguaro did what it had to in defeating No. 15 Dysart, 74-57, to move on to the quarterfinals of the Division II girls basketball state tournament. The Sabercats will take on No. 7 Palo Verde on Monday at 6 p.m. at Grand Canyon University.
No. 13-seeded Notre Dame played tough versus host No. 4 seeded Bradshaw Mountain, but ultimately fell, 47-45, ending their run at a state title.
Boys Basketball
No. 2 Gilbert Christian knocked off No. 18 St Johns, 64-50, to advance to the Division III basketball state tournament. The Knights will match up versus No. 10 Parker on Monday at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley starting at 5:30 p.m.
