Led by Skyler Palermo’s two home runs on the day, Hamilton baseball used a four-run fourth inning to break a tie game and pull away from visiting Basha, 6-4, Tuesday.
Palermo went 3-for-4 with three RBI to go along with the two long balls he hit off Bears’ pitcher Jesus Daal. He also managed to pick up the save, as well, his first of the season.
Huskies’ pitcher Kent Hasler struck out eight while improving his record to 4-1 on the year.
Jamie Westbrook finished 2-for-4 with a double and a home run, while teammate Garrett Doane was 1-for-3 with a solo shot to lead Basha (9-4).
Not to be outdone by Palermo’s big day, teammate Austin Filiere went 2-for-2 with a double and a home run himself, as Hamilton (9-2) outhit the Bears 10-6.
Seton Catholic 2, Campo Verde 1: The Sentinels rallied at home from a 1-0 deficit to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth to claim victory over the Coyotes. Aaron Dotson struck out five, but gave up two earned runs on seven hits and four walks in relief of Campo Verde’s starting pitcher Marcus Colgrove. Dylan Mecham had a double while hitting 1-for-3 for the Coyotes (12-3).
Williams Field 6, Higley 3: Higley forced the action early in tjis rival matchup, but reliever Travis Rowe had a quality outing out of the bullpen to help Williams Field come back. He went four innings and allowed only four baserunners with five strikeouts. Conner Mathers hit a game-tying home run to center in the fourth, which was followed by a three-run fifth inning, with RBIs by Skyler Wengert and Jaxxon Fagg. Sherrick Bader had two hits and Dallas Rosenberger had two hits and an RBI for the Knights. Williams Field moves to 6-0 in Power Point games and hosts Notre Dame on Friday.
Red Mountain 12, Skyline 4: The visiting Coyotes out-hit the Mountain Lions 10-8, but couldn’t keep Red Mountain from rounding the bases eight more times than them. Andrew Apodaca did most of the damage for the Mountain Lions, finishing 2-for-4 with four RBI. Teammate Matthias Ruckle picked up his first win of the season, while Mike Amado took his first loss. Tanner Ketterling went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead Skyline at the plate.
SOFTBALL
Apache Junction 11, Tempe 0: Freshman pitcher Jessica Kraps gave up just one hit, one walk and struck out four in four innings to pick-up her first win ever for the visiting Prospectors. Adrianna Villaverde (2-for-3, triple, three RBI) and teammate Codye Beyer (2-for-2, RBI) led the charge offensively for Apache Junction. Kraps chipped in, going 1-for-2 from the plate with an RBI.
Desert Mountain 7, Shadow Mountain 3: Andy Wellins won her sixth game of the season and the Wolves managed 13 hits in the win. Lexi Pierson was 3 for 4 and Bridget Jones drove in two runs in the sixth when Desert Mountain broke open a tie game with five runs.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Red Mountain def. Westwood 25-20, 25-20, 25-22: Hayden Jacob had nine kills and Alex Arzaga finished with 24 assists, but it wasn’t enough to upend the Mountain lions on the road.
Highland def. Higley 25-9, 25-21, 25-15: Sean Chapman, Jared Greene and Ryan Morrison combined for 23 kills to help the Hawks make quick work of the host Knights. With the win, Highland improved to 4-0 overall.
Mountain View def. Corona del Sol 25-13, 25-22, 25-21: Rock Shill tallied 11 kills and seven aces, Luke Shill recorded 10 kills and Nate Schlappi racked up 42 assists to lead the Toros (7-4) to victory.
