What a difference a year makes.

After falling in the Division I State Softball Championship game the last two years and winning the title in 2008 and 2009, No. 3 Basha was in position to make another long run but was upset by No. 14 Chaparral 12-5, Tuesday.

Led by Lauren La Terra, who finished the game 4-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBI, the Firebirds scorched the Bears’ starting pitcher, Lynea Klemmedson, for 10 runs on 12 hits over the 41/3 innings she pitched.

Likewise, Chaparral’s pitcher, Dallas McBride, had a great day all around, keeping Basha’s quiet for most of the game giving up just five earned runs on nine hits, while helping herself at the plate by going 2-for-5 with a home run.

The Firebirds got things started quickly by scoring two runs apiece in the first three innings. The Bears, led by Kylie Shull and Nicole Matta, two both finished 2-for-4 with a double and RBI, could only muster one.

After Basha  scored  a run in the fourth, Chaparral opened it up by tacking on four in the top of the fifth then two more in the sixth to put it away and end the Bears’ (26-6) shot at another championship run.

The Firebirds (24-10) now move on to face No. 6 Red Mountain today at 7:30 p.m. at Rose Mofford Complex.

Red Mountain 12, Centennial 3: The No. 6 ranked Mountain Lions, got great hitting by Alex Wiley and solid pitching by Bre Macha as they easily advanced to the third round of the Division I State Softball Tournament . Wiley finished 4-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while Macha mixed timely strikeouts (nine total) with timely hits (three overall).  Teammates Marian Ruf had three hits, as well, while Alyssa Fernandez did her part with two hits, including a home run and four RBI. Red Mountain (29-5) will play No. 14 Chaparral today at 7:30 p.m. at Rose Moffod Complex.

Desert Ridge 6, Marana 2: The Jaguars (22-8) defeated the Tigers to advance to the third round of the Division I State Softball Tourney. They will play Cienega today at Rose Mofford. First pitch is 7:30 p.m.

BASEBALL

Coronado del Sol pitcher Jake Martin allowed just two runs on four hits, while striking out seven, while the No. 24 Aztecs lit up No. 8 Saint Mary’s in a 12-2 blowout, Tuesday.

Colby Hamilton led the way at the plate. Already up 2-0 in the second inning, Hamilton smacked a two-run RBI in the third off Knights’ pitcher Antonio Coronado to put Corona del Sol up 4-0. Hamilton finished the day 3-for-3 with three RBI.

Martin (6-1) would only allow a one run in the bottom of the third and one run in the bottom of the sixth, but by then the Aztecs (15-12) were already up comfortably 7-2.

Saint Mary’s ended their season with a record of 24-4.

Corona del Sol will have their hands full as they’ll face No. 1 seeded Desert Mountain Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

Seton Catholic 19, Canyon del Oro 10: The No. 1 seeded Sentinels, led by Daniel Garlid’s nine RBI, teed off on Dorado pitching as they managed to win a slugfest versus No. 16 Canyon del Oro and advance to the third round of the Division II State Baseball Tournament. Seton Catholic will now play No. 8 Gila Ridge Thursday at 4 p.m. at Camelback Ranch Stadium.
