VX Boys Basketball state tournament roundup 2/14: Davis helps Poston Butte rout Prescott

Kyle Davis scored 27 points to lead No. 10 Poston Butte to a big 80-53 first round win over visiting No. 23 Prescott in the Division II boys basketball state tournament Thursday.

Jalen Richard had a double-double for the Broncos, finishing with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Josh Garcia also finished in double digits with 19 points.

Kaeleb Franken added nine points and six rebounds.

Poston Butte will travel to No. 7 Nogales on Saturday for the second round. Tipoff is at 7 p.m.


No. 24 Sunnyside 73, No. 9 Brophy 69: The Blue Devils upset the Broncos on the road in overtime to advance to the second round. Sunnyside will travel to play No. 8 Millennium at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

No. 15 Marcos de Niza 84, No. 18 Ironwood 56: The Padres cruised into the second round with a big win over visiting Glendale Ironwood. Marcos will play No. 2 Laveen Cesar Chavez at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Cesar Chavez H.S.


No. 17 Cactus Shadows 58, No. 18 Notre Dame Prep 44: The Falcons advanced to the second round to take on No. 1 Phoenix Sunnyslope at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Sunnyslope High School.

No. 9 Saguaro 79, No. 24 Flagstaff 48: The Sabercats easily handled visiting Flagstaff to move into the second round. Mike Hauser scored a game-high 20 points. Alec Kretch finished with 15 points and Ryan McGill added 12 points. Saguaro will travel to play No. 8 Tucson Sahuaro at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

No. 11 Greenway 60, No. 22 Queen Creek 42: The Bulldogs saw their season come to an end at the hands of Greenway. The Demons will play at No. 6 Salpointe Catholic at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
