Jordan Baker scored a school record 50 points and all of them were needed as the host Buffaloes beat Seton Catholic 83-78 in a 4A Division II East Sky Region boys basketball game Wednesday night.
Tempe (5-3, 1-1) trailed most of the game and did not take their first lead until three minutes remained in the fourth quarter when Nyial Watson hit two free throws for a 72-71 lead. The Buffaloes outscored the Sentinels 25-14 in the fourth quarter, led by three 3-pointers by B.J. Atkins.
Baker hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Atkins finished with 19 points for Tempe, and Watson had six.
Seton had three players in double figures scoring, led by Adam Engelbert and Frank Contreras who scored 19 points each, and Brett Refner who finished with 17 points. Baker had a double double as he also contributed 10 rebounds.
Tempe beat Anthem Boulder Creek, 2-0, in pool play of the Moon Valley Tournament played at Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix. Jonathan Reyes and Francisco Rosales each scored a goal for the Buffaloes. Tempe (2-1) goalkeeper Victor Sanchez had 10 saves and left the game with a concussion.
Highland beat Desert Mountain, 5-1, in the final day of pool play in the Diablo Tournament at Tempe Sports Complex. Ashley Hatch led the Hawks with two goals, while Molly Ceeler, Lex Pierce and Bethany Hightower each scored for the Hawks. Jordan Greenberg scored the only goal for Desert Mountain.
In another Diablo Tournament match, Hamilton beat Gilbert, 3-1, at Tempe Sports Complex. Sam Weiss scored two goals and Rylie Johnson had one for the Huskies. It was the final game in pool play and quarterfinal action will begin tomorrow in the tournament.
In the second day of pool play in the Horizon Tournament of Champions at Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix, Xavier beat Westwood 13-0. Nikki Walts and Michaela Dooley had three goals each to lead the Gators (4-0).
