34th annual Sun Angel Classic

What: A combined meet of high school and college track and field athletes

When: Thursday through Saturday

Where: Sun Angel Stadium, Arizona State

Admission: $7 for a day pass/$10 for two-day pass

Outlook: While several elite teams and athletes from the East Valley (most Chandler girls, Xavier, Corona del Sol, Queen Creek) will be in California for the prestigious Arcadia Invitational, the Sun Angel meet will be jam-packed with participants (estimated 1,900 high school kids and nearly 450 college athletes) and not short on quality either. Several 2012 Olympians are scheduled to participate (Jessica Cosby/hammer, Brittany Borman/javelin, Jim Steacy/hammer, Heather Steacy/hammer, Liz Gleadle/javelin, Kenneth Medwood/400 hurdles, Sonali Merrill/400 hurdles and Nate Brannan/1,500 run). Among local high school competitors include Mountain Pointe’s Paul Lucas (200 and 400) and Travonn White (long jump), Westwood’s Christian Clark (100 and 200), Desert Vista’s Scott Marshall (high jump) and Chandler’s Alexis Roberts (200). Events will begin with the high school field events on Thursday at 10 a.m. and track events at 12 p.m. Friday will consist of an elite college competition beginning at noon and track events starting at 7:30 p.m. Finals for field events at 10 a.m. on Saturday with running events beginning around 2 p.m. Premiere and elite sections of the events featuring all the top competitors and the championship track races for the high school portion will begin around 6 p.m.
