Queen Creek continued its undefeated season with a 33-12 victory against visiting Show Low.

After a tightly contested first quarter, Queen Creek’s offense hit its stride, carried mostly by junior Weston Barlow’s legs. Barlow ran 26 times for 231 yards and four touchdowns in relief of usual starter Matt Guida who wasn’t available for the game.

“Weston is a great back,” Queen Creek Coach Travis Schureman said. “It’s a nice luxury to have that kind of kid waiting in the wings.”

All told, Queen Creek (3-0) was able to score on six of its eight offensive possessions. The passing game wasn’t called upon often and quarterback Layne Roshay completed just six passes for 54 yards. He rushed for 51, including a 27-yard fourth down scamper in the first quarter where it initially looked as though he was going to be sacked for a big loss.

The defense tightened after the first quarter, recording six sacks of Cougar quarterback Colby Maxwell. The Bulldogs defense also forced three turnovers and held their opponents scoreless for the last 35 minutes of the game. Maxwell played well despite the pressure and hit 15 of his 19 pass attempts. Eight of those passes went to Trevor Solomon, who had 85 yards receiving.

Schureman said his team just needed to settle down after falling behind 7-0 and then 12-7 early in the second quarter.

“We kinda came out a little bit flat in the beginning,” he said. “It’s our first game at home; big crowd. You want to impress everyone, but after that first quarter we dialed it in and started getting after it.”

In addition to the problems Queen Creek’s defense gave Show Low (1-2), field position was an issue as its average starting point was its own 29-yard line. The best starting position it had all game was at its own 38.

As for the Bulldogs’ transition in the wake of Joe Germainne stepping down last week, Schureman said that there hasn’t been any difficulty.

“It’s been pretty easy. These are great kids and they don’t miss a beat,” Schureman said. “And we’re not changing anything that we’ve done. It’s the same system. It’s a little bit different because I’m calling the plays but that’s about it.”
