Gilbert High girls basketball coach Tom Bunger won the 500th game of his career last week when the Tigers defeated Chandler Hamilton. Bunger has collected his wins at Prescott High, Mesa Mountain View and Gilbert.
Bunger and Gilbert Highland coach Miner Webster, who face each other tonight to decide the 5A-I Fiesta Region title, each are in the 500-win club. Webster is looking for victory No. 555.
Briehl to Air Force
Scottsdale Notre Dame tight end Austin Briehl has received an appointment to attend Air Force. Briehl had 45 catches for 682 yards and eight touchdowns for the 4A-II champion Saints this year.
He will join Saints teammate Brandon Hirneise at the academy.
3 PIONEERS COMMIT
Three members of the Phoenix Pinnacle football team made commitments recently. Quarterback Evan Johnson, who threw for 1,801 yards and nine touchdowns and ran for 640 yards and 12 scores, is headed to Wayne State College in Nebraska.
Receiver Max Zemezonak, who had a team-high 41 receptions for 664 yards and accounted for 10 touchdowns, will play at Butler in Indiana, and defensive lineman Derek Raymond, who finished the season with 41 tackles and five sacks, will next suit up for Fort Hays State University in Kansas.
Chaparral A.D. in hospital
Scottsdale Chaparral athletic director Anton Nowak is in the hospital with an undetermined illness. He has been on leave for about two months, with assistant principal Corey Newland acting as athletic director.
With power points used by 5A through 2A basketball now, and private schools dominating the finals of the conference, this week’s region tournaments mean everything.
This week’s 2A Metro Region basketball tournament is comprised of 14 teams who compete in four of the five 2A regions during the season — Central, West, South and East. It’s seeded based on regular-season power rankings. The top four teams qualify for next week’s state tournament. Also, rather than being spread evenly throughout the 16-team state bracket, all four Metro qualifiers will compete in the same half at state, meaning only one can play in the state final.
Today the girls play first-round games at the site of the highest seed. The same Wednesday for the boys. Thursday the sites are the highest seed with girls playing at 5:30 p.m. and boys at 7:30 p.m. The semifinals, third-place and championship games for each are set for Friday and Saturday at Phoenix College.

Chandler Valley Christian’s Travis Pratt (145 lbs.) was the school’s lone wrestler to qualify for the 1A/2A state tournament by placing third at the 2A Metro Region tournament Saturday.
