VX roundup 3/14: Chaparral softball secures win; Basha finishes 4-1 in tourney

Sera Talley and Dallas McBride combined to give up just one run on one hit to lead visiting Chaparral to a 6-1 victory over Westview on Thursday.

Leading 3-0 in the fifth thanks to a Kendra Colman home run, Talley and the Firebirds (9-4) were rolling along before Talley landed oddly and was forced to leave the game due to injury.

McBride came on in relief and led Chaparral the rest of the way, giving up just one unearned run on no hits.

The Firebirds answered back in the top of the sixth when Lauren LaTerra smacked a two-run RBi single to push the score to 5-1. Chaparral then added one more insurance run in the inning to wrap it up.

Soraya Hernandez got the only hit for the Knights (7-4), finishing 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Westview pitcher Mikaela Reed, allowed six runs on 13 hits in the loss.

BASEBALL

Hamilton 11, Corona del Sol 1 (5 innings): The Huskies (7-2) made quick work of the Aztecs, scoring five runs in the first inningoff Corona del Sol pitcher, nathan Birecki in the rout. Hamilton's Cody Bellinger pitched four innings to get the win. Combined with teammate Tyler Hills, the duo combined to give up only one run on two hits.

Basha 8, Skyline 3: Jaime Westbrook went 3-for-4 with a home run and two doubles to lead the Bears (9-3) to victory in the Mesquite/Chandler Tournament. Basha would go on to lose their next game 3-2 to Desert Vista to finish with a 4-1 record in the tournament.

Mesquite 6, Red Mountain 3: Matt Waldren went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI to led the Wildcats (10-5) to victory. Mesquite pitcher Matt Heibult picked up the win giving up just three hits and one run in five innings. Tristyn Robillard went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Mountain Lions (8-5). Red Mountain pitcher CJ James took the loss.
