One of the best ways to bounce back from a tough loss is correcting some of the things that led to being on the short end of the score.

Chaparral made few errors Thursday in a convincing 42-6 victory over Glendale Mountain Ridge. The Firebirds lost 56-45 to Marcos de Niza last week.

“We talked about plays left on the field last week and needing to rectify some things,” said Chaparral coach David Huffine. “I know Mountain Ridge was depleted, but it was good to play well, and, for the most part, we eliminated a lot of turnovers and penalties.”

Junior quarterback Sean Paul Brophy threw three touchdown passes to three different receivers and five different players scored TDs in the win.

“They were strong up front and we game-planned all week to get the ball to the perimeter and get a lot of one-on-one matchups,” said Brophy, who finished 22-for-29 for 259 yards. “(We’ve got a lot of weapons) and it’s hard to double-cover anyone.”

Mountain Ridge answered Chaparral’s first touchdown, a 24-yard pass to Izzy Simpson, with an 82-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Marcus Moore, but the Lions (1-2) missed the PAT. The Firebirds (2-1)  followed with five unanswered touchdowns.

Brophy found Tyler Whiley wide open down the left sideline for a 23-yard score, the first of three second-quarter touchdowns. Malcolm Thomas scored on a 14-yard run and Whiley added a 16-yard run for a score to give Chaparral a 28-6 advantage.

The Firebirds added two more third-quarter touchdowns. Running back Devin Magana had a 6-yard run and Brophy went 6-for-6 for 61 yards on the final third-quarter drive, climaxing with an 11-yard touchdown pass to tight end Trevor Wood.

Three receivers had six catches or more. Simpson grabbed six for 68 yards. Wood had six for 60, while Elijah Castro totaled seven for 90. Whiley added 69 rushing yards.

The Firebirds had 23 first downs to the Lions six.

“This was a pretty good team effort,” Huffine said. “Our defense did their job swarming to the ball. Last week was not indicative of what our football team is defensively.”
