Winning the Peoria Invitational title Saturday night gave DaWayne Robertson a lot of confidence.

A lot.

It is understandable considering the Westwood state placer knocked off an Arizona three-time state champion - Safford's Trey Andrews - for the title.

"I trained hard for this one," said Robertson, who finished third in Division I last year. "I had to take him down. It feels great. I'm still taking it in."

The 7-3 win at 120 pounds for Robertson was one of the better matches in a finals filled with quality wrestlers and good competitive matches.

Robertson, who lost 5-1 to Andrews at the Westwood tournament earlier this season, was named Outstanding Wrestler along with 132-pounder Bronson Ashjian (Cimarron Memorial H.S.) and Sunrise Mountain's Brennan Smith at 160.

Desert Vista won the team title with 205.5 points, behind three finalists as senior Jimi Dixie (170) and junior Alex Bambic (195) came away champions and senior Derek Allen (152) was second.

Tucson Sunnyside took second with 198 points.

Robertson set the tone early with a takedown with a barrel roll on the edge, then when Andrews got too high on the cross body Robertson got a reversal for a 4-3 lead after two. He put it away with a takedown when he dropped his hips on Andrews desperation throw.

The win was a huge confidence boost and Robertson was shooting for the best afterwards.

"My confidence is high now and I'm looking for (two-time state champion from Chandler) Dalton (Brady)," Robertson said. "I want to take him out. I have to train harder and get ready for him."

Robertson has the skills to back it up and might get the chance as early as next week at the Flowing Wells Invitational in Tucson.

While Robertson made a big impression with his performance - and his post-match thoughts - the East Valley team that made the most noise was Hamilton.

The Huskies finished fifth with 141 points after starting the second day in 14th. Alamosa (Colo) and Servite (Calif.) were third and fourth, while the Huskies shot up the leaderboard as they finished with six placers.

"We had a great second day," Hamilton coach Pat Quinn said. "They wrestled hard. We always seem to have a better second day."

Hamilton's placers were champion Brandon Gavre (145), runner-up Alex Burgoyne (195), Estevan Ulibarri (third, 126), Nick Falcon (fifth, 160), Shawn Gunter (fourth, 170) and Derek Andressen (fourth, 182).

Gavre beat Servite's Tim Henry 10-5 in the finals to improve to 20-1 on the year as he won the first tournament of his career.

"This is because I busted my (butt) doing sprints and circuit training," he said. "The third period is my time. When they are tired and gassed I'm still pushing it."
