Tucson Sunnyside dominated Cottonwood Mingus on Friday night in a 55-7 victory in the Class 4A state quarterfinals in Tucson.
After squeaking by Cienega 21-20 on the final play last week in the first round, the fifth-seeded Blue Devils amassed 551 total yards in their home victory on Friday.
The Blue Devils (10-2) face top-seeded Chaparral (12-0) in the semifinals at 7 p.m. next Friday at Phoenix College.
Sunnyside was led by junior running back Xavier Smith, who was unstoppable up the middle with 174 yards on 15 carries.
"I saw they were overpursuing," Smith said. "I knew we were controlling the line of scrimmage."
Sunnyside coach Richard Sanchez said he was happy but not satisfied yet.
"I will hand out the compliments when this whole thing is over," Sanchez said.
Sunnyside scored on each of its four first-half possessions.
In the first half, No. 13 Mingus (9-4) proved it could move the ball with drives of 57, 51 and 65 yards.
The Marauders did not score, however, until John Wixom found Jerome Kellenbenz on a 13-yard crossing pattern in the end zone with 9 seconds left in the half.
