Bo Barnes led all scorers with 18 points, including two foul shots with 14 seconds remaining to break a tie and give Scottsdale Christian a 55-53 win over Tempe Marcos de Niza in the first round of the Horizon Invitational boys basketball tournament Thursday night.

Hayden Johnson added 15 points and brother Marcus Johnson scored 12 for the Eagles (5-0).

Devin Barnes scored 16 to lead Marcos de Niza. Harrison Evens added 15 for the Padres.

Scottsdale Christian will face Glendale Deer Valley in the second round tonight.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Brendon Lavender and Nathan Murphy each scored 14 points as Mountain View (9-1) defeated El Dorado (Las Vegas) in the first round of the George Mulanado Classic in Nevada. Ranked as the top seed in the tournament, Mountain View will next play in the semifinals tonight. Jordan McLelland added 13 and both Eric Hunt and Tyson Ellsworth scored 10 points for the Toros. ...

Visiting Westwood hung on to beat Yuma 66-59 in overtime in pool play of the Southwest Rotary Classic. Kenny O’Bannon led the Warriors (4-3) with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Dermaine Crockrell added 11 points and 12 assists. ...

Donte Medder led all scorers with 19 and added six assists as Mesa (5-4) defeated Sunrise Mountain 75-41 in the Horizon Invitational. Aaron Fuller scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds and Beau Gardner added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

BOYS SOCCER

Brandon Norem continued his dominant play and blistering scoring pace by adding three goals for Arcadia (4-0) in a 5-2 nonregion victory over Phoenix Shadow Mountain. Norem has scored three or more goals in each of his first four games for a total of 13 this season. Brandon’s younger brother, sophomore Harry, added a goal for the Titans, as did Miguel Estrada. ...

Javier Ramirez scored three goals as host Marcos de Niza beat Westwood 6-0 in a 5A nonregion game. Greg Gloria, Reid Smith and Ramond Kadzashie added a goal each for the Padres (2-1). ...

Visiting Tempe High came back to beat Marana 2-1 in a 4A nonregion game. With the Buffaloes trailing 1-0 with 13 minutes left in the second half, Misael Beundia knocked in a bicycle kick to tie the game. Then, with five minutes left, Obedd Fuentes scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick. Lolo Fuentes had 15 saves for the Buffaloes (4-1-1).

GIRLS SOCCER

McClintock improved to 6-1 after defeating St. Mary’s 6-1 in the Notre Dame Tournament behind two goals from MacKenzie Stevens. Amy Korwin, Ana Bernal, Griselda Bonilla and Dana Rosenbaum all scored goals for the Chargers. Viviane Noreaga scored the lone goal for St. Mary’s. ...

Danielle Shorts scored four goals as Highland (3-3) defeated host Mountain Pointe 6-3. Kat McDonald scored all three goals for the Pride, each coming in the second half. Gretchen Kulick and Megan Jerome added goals for the Hawks.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Playing in two games during pool play at the Bradshaw Mountain Holiday Tournament, Mesa (3-6) came away with victories in both, defeating Mingus 57-47 in the first game and Cholla 41-37 in the second. Tonia Pena scored 14 points to lead her team against Mingus and added seven more against Cholla.
