Mattie Merrell pitched a complete game, two-hitter, while also hitting a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to lead host Queen Creek to a 2-1 victory over Higley on Thursday.

After allowing her only run in the fourth inning, Merrell held the Knights (8-11) scoreless the rest of the way, then hit what proved to be the game winning RBI off Knights’ pitcher Bailey Skipper after teammate Lexis Valenzuela hit an RBI double to tie the game a 1-1.

Valenzuela finished the game 1-for-4, while Merrell improved her record on the year to 14-4.

The Bulldogs are now 18-8 on the season.

SOFTBALL

Poston Butte 12, Skyline 1: Emily Lodge hit a grand slam in the seventh inning to cap the blowout victory for the Broncos (15-7). Lodge also picked up the win pitching, while teammate Cameron Cassinalli hit two home runs on the night.

Campo Verde 8, Apache Junction 0: The Coyotes improved their record to 14-12 with a lopsided shutout over the Prospectors (11-15). Samantha Leighty was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs to lead Campo Verde.

Red Mountain 12, Chandler 1:  The Mountain Lions started the scoring in the second inning and didn't let up in run-ruling Chandler five innings. The middle of the Lions' lineup, Jordan Beck, Marian Ruf, and Ashley Hill, each had two hits to lead the Red Mountain offense. Hill and Alex Wiley finished the game with two RBIs each, and Marian Ruf pitched well, giving up only one earned run on four hits.

Desert Mountain 18, McClintock 0: Carlie Mills was 4-for-4 with a home run and 4 RBIs, Skylar Weinstein had two home runs and five RBI and pitch Andy Wellins (18-4) pitched a shutout as the Wolves (21-7) made quick work of the Chargers (8-20), beating them in four innings. Mary Mentz took the loss for McClintock.

Horizon 2, Mountain View 1: Tamara Statman was 3-for-4 from the plate but did just enough from the mound as the visiting Huskies scored two runs in the third inning and held on to defeat the Toros. Horizon improved to 24-3 with the win, while Mountain View dropped to 21-6.

BASEBALL

McClintock 7, Desert Mountain 5:  Led by Craig McGinnis' home run and two RBIs, six different McClintock players drove in runs in the upset. Joey Schmidgall picked up the win for the Chargers with 5 1/3 innings and three earned runs allowed. Jakob Goldfarb reached based three times and scored twice for the Wolves in the loss, but no Wolves hitters managed more than one hit.

Mountain Pointe 8, Mesa 4: Michael Weaver was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, jake Alexander was 3-for-4 with a solo home run and Brantiey Bell finished the day 3-for-5 with three doubles to help the Mountain Lions (18-7) to a victory over the Jackrabbits (12-14). Mesa’s Brock Hale finished the game 3-for-4, including a three-run home run he hit in the fifth inning. Bell was the winning pitcher, improving to 4-2 on the year.

Arcadia 3, Saguaro 2: Arcadia overcame a dominating effort by Saguaro starting pitcher Nick Meservey in a come-from-behind victory over Saguaro Thursday night at Scottsdale Stadium. Meservey struck out 12, walked none and gave up only four hits, but one was a two-run home run by the Titans' Josh Arndt, which tied the game in the sixth inning. A double by Luke Pine scored Tyler Murphy in the seventh in what turned out to be the game winner for Arcadia. The Sabercats got the scoring started with a run scoring double by Brett Adams in the third inning and a Titans error in the fourth. Chris Paulson went four innings, Thomas Halter threw two scoreless and Cameron Jarvis got the save by shutting down the Sabercats in the seventh.

Coronado 12, Bourgade Catholic 5: Jacob Warren went 3-for3 with two RBI and teammate Daniel Triplett was 2-for-3 with two RBI of his own as the Dons (8-9) put up a nine spot in the third inning to run away with the win. Victor Hanks got the win, while Sam Nemeth suffered the loss. Tanner Schneider and Jorge Heldalgo both finished 3-for-4 to lead the Golden Eagles (11-12).
