Thunder knock off Pride in OT

Travis Gabbidon nailed a 3-point field goal with 1:35 left in overtime — his only basket of the game — to put Desert Vista ahead for good, and the visiting Thunder went on to edge Mountain Pointe, 50-47, in a 5A Central Region game Friday.

Micky Burtnyk added two free throws with 22 seconds left for the final margin of victory as the Thunder (22-4, 6-1) wrapped up the region title with a week of play remaining. Mountain Pointe (11-7, 3-3) was led by Brett Collins with 16 points — 12 in the second half. Penn Washington added 10 for the Pride.

Xavier Kilby led Desert Vista with 14 points and Clint Polk added 12, including a layup with two seconds left in regulation that forced overtime.

MCCLINTOCK 88, PHOENIX MOON VALLEY 76: The Chargers turned up the pressure and the tempo in the second half to get past the visiting Rockets in a 4A Skyline Region game.

McClintock (19-4, 6-2) trailed 39-37 at halftime before going to a full-court press in the third quarter to pull away from Moon Valley (2-6 region). Gabe Freeman hit 17 field goals in the game and finished with 35 points, many coming off assists from Jermaine Calvin, who added 11 points. Freeman also finished with 15 rebounds. Ceaser Montemayor added 12 points and Ryan Bailey 11 for McClintock.

Ramon Ramirez had 26 points and Major Willette 21 for the Rockets.

GILBERT 72, YUMA KOFA 49: The host Tigers were dominant from the start against the Kings in a 5A Fiesta Region game.

J.P. Price came off the bench to hit three 3-pointers in a first half that saw Gilbert (23-2, 7-1) take a 41-22 lead. Price finished with nine points. Ryan Toolson led a balanced Gilbert attack with 13 points, while Sean Cayton had 12, Mike Grothaus 11 and Stas Chomokos 10. Kofa (10-15, 0-8) was led by Chris Durham's game-high 15 points.

DOBSON 61, SKYLINE 44: The Mustangs (16-10, 7-1) defeated the visiting Coyotes (7-16, 1-7) in a 5A East Valley Region matchup. Dobson jumped out to an early lead, going on a 19-6 run in the first quarter, and was able to maintain that cushion.

Jeff Hibbing scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds for Dobson, while Matt McConnell added 17 points.

RED MOUNTAIN 57, WESTWOOD 48: Preston Pacheco had 21 points to lead the host Mountain Lions (11-14, 4-4) over the Warriors (6-18, 0-8) in a 5A East Valley Region contest. Jaren Parham and Thomas Spradley had 14 points apiece for Westwood. Red Mountain allowed just 14 first-half points.

ARCADIA 79, TEMPE 71: Trent Button scored a game-high 27 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the host Titans (18-5, 6-2) beat the Buffaloes in a 4A East Sky Region game. Arcadia's Matt Crowe added 21 points while Chaz Moody had 11. Zarin Sells led Tempe with 24 points.

MARCOS DE NIZA 56, CORONA DEL SOL 47: Jon Ziri had 16 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter as the host Padres (20-5, 4-3) rallied to beat the Aztecs (9-14, 1-4) in a 5A Central Region contest. LJ Jones and Dubois Williams added 10 points apiece for Marcos de Niza, which got its third 20-win season in school history. Dan Winterbottom had 20 points for Corona del Sol.

MESQUITE 46, CHANDLER 41: The Wildcats (15-9, 3-5) defeated the visiting Wolves (12-12, 3-5) in a 5A Fiesta Region matchup. Tyler McGinn led Mesquite with 13 points and 15 rebounds and Jerry Bryant added 16 points. Joe Shaw led Chandler with nine points.

PARADISE VALLEY 63, NORTH CANYON 39: The host Trojans (19-5, 7-1) started fast to move into sole possession of first place in the 5A Desert Valley Region with a victory over the Rattlers (3-15, 0-8). Jon Ward led P.V. with 15 points.

APACHE JUNCTION 52, CORONADO 47: The Prospectors defeated the host Dons in a 4A East Sky Region game.

Matt Garcia led all scorers with 20 points, while Steve Elman added 13 points for Apache Junction. Coronado got 16 points from Nick Galvan.

HORIZON 62, PHOENIX ST. MARY'S 50: Jason Burkhardt had 19 points as the visiting Huskies (11-11, 4-4) defeated the Knights (10-10, 5-3) in Desert Valley game.
