Explosive first half plays highlighted Saguaro’s dominant 55-13 victory over Arcadia.

The scoring happened quickly for the visiting Sabercats (Div. III, 7-2), who scored on their second play from scrimmage with a 60-yard pass from junior quarterback Luke Rubenzer to Christian Kirk. Saguaro would then score on its next two offensive plays, one a 73-yard completion to Isaiah Bradley and the next a 69-yard scamper for Kirk, who got the ball on an end around handoff. In Saguaro’s first four offensive plays, it scored three touchdowns and amassed 214 total yards. These scores would be all Saguaro would need.

In addition to his two offensive touchdowns, Kirk also ran a punt back 84 yards for a third quarter score.

“[Kirk’s] a special player,” Saguaro coach Jason Mohns said. “We try to find different ways to put the ball in his hands. It’s crazy sometimes we forget that he’s only a sophomore and we have him for two more years after this.”

Despite only attempting eight passes, Rubenzer controlled Arcadia’s defense. He threw two touchdowns and ran for one more, which was a 63-yard scramble. He also spread the ball around by completing at least one pass to five different receivers.

With the victory, Saguaro clinches a playoff spot, but Mohns wasn’t concerned about where it might land in the tournament.

“We just wanted to get in. We don’t really care what seed we are,” said Mohns. “If we have to go on the road, we’ll go on the road.”

Things never got on track for Arcadia (Div. III, 3-6), which didn’t get on the board until the third quarter. Coach Lenny Abt attributed his team’s struggles to the size and speed of the visiting Sabercats.

“We tried to keep everything positive, but it’s hard. You’re on the field and doing everything you can and they’re just so talented,” Abt said. “There was no quit in [our team] though. The kids played hard for all four quarters and that’s what I expected of them.”

With a rushing attack that never got going and a stifled passing game, the Titans had little chance of mounting a comeback after they trailed Saguaro 42-0 at halftime. Senior running back Steven Moala finished with 67 rushing yards, while Alex Reynolds caught two second-half touchdowns.
