The first round of the Division I state baseball tournament saw several upsets on Saturday.
None were bigger than No. 24 Corona del Sol’s, 6-5, win over No. 9 Hamilton.
The Huskies were the preseason’s number one ranked team.
On Saturday the host Huskies made a furious final inning comeback but it was not enough.
The Aztecs (14-12) built a 6-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the final frame Corona del Sol committed two costly errors which opened the door for Hamilton.
Billy Clemens came on in relief in the seventh inning and induced three consecutive fly outs with runners on first and second base to secure the win.
Josh Ethier got the scoring started in the first inning with a two run home run for the Aztecs.
Hamilton matched Corona with two runs of its own in the first inning but the Aztecs controlled the second through sixth innings.
Kyle Pechloff went 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Huskies.
Corona will next face No. 8 Phoenix St. Mary's on Tuesday at Tempe Diablo Stadium at 4 p.m.
No. 12 Gilbert 12, No. 21 San Luis 3: The Host Tigers advanced to the second round behind a strong hitting performance. Gilbert scored twelve runs on twelve hits. Jack Zoellner finished 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBIs. Josh Moore was 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Travis Goodwin finished 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBIs. The Tigers advance to play at No. 5 Tolleson on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
No. 17 Vail Cienega 3, No. 16 Horizon 1: The Huskies were unable to get much going in the first round. Matt Kroon had a solo home run in the seventh inning to avoid the shutout. Horizon finished the season at 16-14.
No. 13 Mesquite 10, No. 20 Yuma Cibola 0: Mesquite had 14 hits on the day led by Cole Valletta who finished 4-for-4 with a double, triple and an RBI. Alex Murrieta was 2-for-2 with an RBI and Jaeben Smith finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. The game was called after six innings due to the mercy rule. James Harrington pitched a complete game and allowed just four hits. The Wildcats will face No. 4 Pinnacle on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the second round.

No. 12 Saguaro 10, No. 21 Prescott Valley Bradshaw Mountain 2: The Sabercats were led by Turner Lace who finished with three hits and two RBIs. Nick Meservey picked up the win with four innings pitched. Meservey had three strikeouts and gave up three hits. Stephen Wright pitched the final three innings and picked up the save. Wright allowed just two hits and had three strikeouts. Saguaro will play at No. 5 Phoenix Sunnyslope on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
No. 11 Arcadia 11, No. 22 Douglas 1: Jimmy Roren went 3-for-4 with a two run home run as Arcadia had 13 hits. Sam Huff added two RBIs for the Titans. Arcadia will face No. 6 Tucson Ironwood Ridge on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the next round.
No. 15 Queen Creek 8, No. 18 Williams Field 7: Kody Funderburke hit the game winning walk-off single in the eighth inning for the Bulldogs (18-10). Funderburke finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs. Ryan Kottcamp finished 4-for-5 with a double, two stolen bases and an RBI while Josh Andrews was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Chase Beal pitched the eighth inning and got the win. Queen Creek will face No. 2 Phoenix Greenway on Tuesday in the next round.
No. 14 Peoria Liberty 5, Cactus Shadows 2: The Falcons season ends at 14-15 overall.
