Prep highlights: Chandler nips Desert Mountain on buzzer-beater

Andre Gibson scored 11 points for Chandler High but none were as crucial as his last two.

Gibson hit the game-winning shot with three seconds remaining to give the Wolves a 61-59 victory over Scottsdale Desert Mountain in a 5A-II nonregion boys basketball game Tuesday night at Desert Mountain High School.

Teammate Eli Godinez led the team with 19 points and Andre’s brother, Cameron Gibson, added four.

Kyle Smith put in 21 points and pulled down 13 rebounds for Desert Mountain, while Colby Wagner added 16 for the Wolves.

BOYS SOCCER

Senior Brandon Norem scored 3 goals, including the game winner in overtime, in his first career varsity game as host Arcadia defeated Notre Dame Prep 5-4. Norem, who had played club-level soccer all throughout high school and decided to make the jump to the varsity team this year, scored in the second minute of the second overtime to put the final touches on a remarkable debut. Not to be outdone, Notre Dame freshman Cian Lundy made an impressive debut as well, scoring two goals for the Saints.

Adam Saad scored the first goal of the season for Desert Mountain as the Wolves won their season opener 2-0 over Alhambra. Scott Terril netted the second goal as the Wolves scored both times in the first half.

Highland defeated host Brophy 2-0 in the teams’ season opener. Agustin Jimenez and Finley O’Neil both scored goals for the Hawks.

Glenn Hokanson and Justin Incarnati combined for the shutout.

Junior Brad Mason scored two goals and Jorden Meier made three saves as Gilbert blanked Dobson 4-0.

Mason, an All-State honorable mention player last year, is entering his third season for the Tigers. Brian Davies and Jake Zimmerman added a goal apiece as David Urbina added two assists for Gilbert (1-0).

Corona del Sol made an impressive season debut, defeating host Mesa 5-0 behind the dominating play of Trever Allen, who scored two goals and added two assists for the Aztecs.

Kaue Martins and David Lutz also netted a goal each with Mesa putting in an own-goal to round out the scoring.

The score could have been even worse, but Mesa used a strong performance and nine saves from goalkeeper Antonio Lara to keep the Aztecs to just five goals.

GIRLS SOCCER

Colleen Amrhein had four goals to lead visiting Seton Catholic past Independence 9-1 in a 4A nonregion game. Jessica Lopez added two goals for the Sentinels (1-0).

WRESTLING

Perry High School won its first-ever wrestling match as the Pumas beat host Seton Catholic 62-18 in a 4A-II nonregion match. Perry is in its first year and has no juniors or seniors on its wrestling team.

Dustin Dunning recorded a pin in 1:23 at 103 pounds for the Pumas.

Perry had four pins and won by forfeit six times. The only close match was at 130 where Jake Caltaux from Perry won a decision 12-10.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Visiting Tempe Prep beat Phoenix Day School for the Deaf 43-29 in a 1A West Region game. Liberty Brittian led the Knights (2-0) with 15 points, while Robyn Robledo finished with 12 points.

Valley Christian escaped Coolidge with a 57-44 victory to improve to 2-0 on the year. Coolidge missed the potential game-tying 3-pointer with five seconds left.

Amy Frost led the way for the Trojans with 21 points and nine rebounds.

Katie Graham had 16 points to lead four players in double figures as Queen Creek (6-0) rolled past Bradshaw Mountain on the road 60-34. Jamie Kottcamp added 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs in victory.

Amy Patton had 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead host McClintock past Sunnyslope 78-34 in a 4A I nonregion game. The Chargers (6-1) took control of the game in the second quarter when they outscored the Vikings 26-3. Ariana Arnold added 12 points for McClintock, which had 22 steals.

McKenzie Flannigan scored 21 points and added nine rebounds as Chandler defeated Desert Mountain 77-32.

Brianna Arbuckle added 16 points and 12 rebounds and Kashara Starks contributed 12 points and seven rebounds for the victorious Wolves.

Alyssa Cornell led Desert Mountain in scoring with 16 points.

Cheryl Ralph’s triple-double of 19 points, 13 rebounds and 10 steals helped Coronado (1-5) defeat Dysart (1-1) at home 53-31. Shauntrell Johnson added 18 points and six steals in the Dons’ win.

Andrea Jones made all six 3-pointers she attempted while scoring 22 points to lead Dobson over Corona del Sol at home 70-44. Dominique Gray 16 points and nine rebounds for the Mustangs in the win.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Host Mountain View beat Deer Valley 88-62 in a 5A nonregion game.

The Toros (3-0) trailed 29-28 at halftime and then blew the game open in the second half outscoring the Skyhawks 60-33 in the half. Brandon Lavender led the Toros (3-0) with 28 points, and Jordan McLelland finished with 18.

Host Valley Christian beat Coolidge 69-44 in a nonregion game. Nate Van Weelden had a triple-double with 19 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for the Eagles (2-0). Micah Kidd and Bryant Avent added 11 points apiece.

Nick Witherill scored Highland’s first 10 points and ended up with 25 to help host Highland (4-2) knock off Basha (3-2) 66-60. Chris Johnson added 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Hawks in the victory.

Ryan Evans scored 21 points and John Jackson scored 15 as Hamilton (1-0) opened its season with an upset over host Marcos de Niza (0-2), 63-51.
