VX Roundup 4/23: Ryan McGill's single leads Saguaro baseball past Fountain Hills

Senior Ryan McGill made the most of senior day as Saguaro beat Fountain Hills, 5-4, on Tuesday in Division II baseball action.

McGill had a walk off single as the Sabercats (15-14) ended the regular season with a winning record.

Saguaro held a 3-2 lead heading into the seventh but the Falcons got a single from Devin Foyle which was followed by an error.

A triple by Nick Wojtysiak put Fountain Hills ahead heading into bottom half of the final frame.

The Sabercats got singles from Michael Bloom and Shane Stansbury to start the bottom of the seventh.

Then after a wild pitch, McGill gave Saguaro something to celebrate.

Turner Lace got the win in relief for the Sabercats.


Williams Field 6, Campo Verde 2: The host Black Hawks played steady team ball to defeat the Coyotes. Despite an impressive 14-4 power point record, the Black Hawks will most likely have to beat Higley on the road on Wednesday for their shot to get into the playoffs.  Chris Quackenbush got the win for Williams Field.

Desert Mountain 5, Horizon 0: The Wolves shut out the Huskies led by David Greer who finished 3-for-4 at the plate. Jakob Goldfarb and Ben Rodriguez each had two RBI for Desert Mountain. Cody Erickson pitched a complete game shutout and allowed just four hits with four strikeouts. The Wolves finished the regular season at 26-4.


Basha 10, Gilbert 0; Hamilton 19, Vista Grande 0.


Red Mountain 12, Dobson 0: The Mountain Lions finished the 2013 regular season with a shutout of the Mustangs. Jordan Thomas, Marian Ruf and Ashley Hill each had two hits. Each Mountain Lion who played got a hit. The game ended on a walk-off grand slam by Bre Macha to give the Lions the five inning run rule win. Macha had 11 strikeouts at the mound for Red Mountain as she pitched all five innings.

Desert Mountain 5, Horizon 3: Andy Wellins won her 20th game of the season as the Wolves took a one run lead in the fourth inning on an Emily Smith double. Horizon went ahead, 3-1, on Kaila Jacobi’s three run home run. Desert Mountain scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two run home run by Cheyann Tucker and run scoring singles by Smith and Jana Froehle to put the game out of reach.

Desert Vista 5, Maricopa 0: The Thunder scored all five runs in the fifth inning where they collected five of their eight hits. Michaela Duarte and Ali Cerminara each had an RBI in the inning. Danielle Block notched her 15th victory of the season with a three hit shutout that included 11 strikeouts.

Xavier 12, Ironwood 1.


Xavier 3, Hamilton 2; Queen Creek 11, Seton Catholic 3.

Boys Volleyball

Highland def. Desert Ridge 25-17, 25-16, 25-21: Hayden Nielsen had 11 kills and two blocks to lead the Hawks past the Jaguars. Bryce Farabee added 11 kills and Collin Ward contributed 27 assists and a block as Highland improved to 13-1 on the season.
