Former Highland coach Jon Burns has been chosen as the new boys basketball coach at Mesquite.
He coached the Hawks for three seasons earlier this decade, making the state championship game in 2002.
He coached at Hickman High in Columbia, Mo. last year and was at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas before that.
Burns plans on moving back in a couple weeks and will return in time for a summer basketball camp.
"I enjoyed my time out in Arizona," Burns said. "I preferred (returning) to that same district. There is a comfort level there."
Burns takes over for Tom Saltzstein, whose resignation in March was controversial.
Sources said that there was a meeting between Saltzstein, Mesquite athletic director Anthony Scanio and principal Cecilia Peterson in which Saltzstein was told to resign or he would be fired.
Saltzstein tried to withdraw his letter of resignation three days after sending it in, but that request was denied by the Mesquite administration.
Scanio denied that Saltzstein was asked to resign.
Several former and current players have been vocal in their support for Saltzstein, but Burns does not believe it will have an effect on him.
"I don't think that impacts us," said Burns, who was unaware of the controversy. "That was last year. I don't kow what that has to do with us this year. I don't think it's related to me in any way. That doesn't bother me one bit."
