For the second consecutive week Mesquite pitched a shutout. This time, the Wildcats (5-1) rolled past Westwood, 49-0, on Friday night at Mesquite. The Wildcats led 35-0 at halftime as their offense could not be stopped in the first half.

“Our kids are starting to execute really well," Mesquite coach Jim Jones said. "Defensively they get to the ball extremely well. We are pretty strong defensively. The offense is executing extremely well as well. We are in pretty good shape. We are starting to gel and that’s kind of exciting.”

Mesquite quarterback Payton Haslam was a part of every touchdown scored in the first half for the Wildcats. Haslam threw three touchdown passes in the first half and ran for two more.

“We played really well," Haslam said. "I have to give all the credit to my offensive line and the coaches calling the plays. We all came together and had a team victory. I had never had a rushing touchdown before this game so it felt good.”

Westwood had one chance to get on the scoreboard in the first half. The Warriors (4-2) started with a short field on their final drive of the half after Mesquite was called for a personal foul penalty on the kickoff return. Kane Tieman finished the half with a nice run that got the Warriors all the way down to the Wildcats 1-yard line. Unfortunately for Westwood, time ran out before the Warriors were able to get another play off.

“We have to get better," Westwood coach Spencer Stowers said. "Get better as coaches, get better as players. Mesquite was more physical then we were. We could not wrap up, we couldn’t get off blocks and we couldn’t finish plays.”

On defense Mesquite held the Warriors to just 103 yards of total offense and forced two turnovers. The Wildcats also ran the ball well. As a team Mesquite rushed the ball 40 times for 190 yards, the bulk of which came from Paul Perry. Perry rushed the ball 23 times for 130 yards.

Haslam sat for most of the second half with the game well in-hand, but he still finished 12-of-20 passing for 130 yards with four touchdowns through the air and two rushing touchdowns.
