No. 3 Highland pulled out a win over No. 6 Goodyear Millennium, 4-3, in a shootout of the Division I girls soccer state tournament quarterfinals on Saturday.
Bre McCarter scored the lone goal of the game for the Hawks (19-1-3). Paige Ashton made a big save in the shootout to preserve the win for Highland.
The Hawks will face Xavier on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Campo Verde High School in the semifinals.
In other Division I girls state soccer matches....No. 2 Xavier beat No. 10 Chaparral, 2-0, at Xavier in another quarterfinals match. Nikki Walts and Michaela Dooley had a goal each for the Gators (18-3-1). Dooley and Cassidy Cunningham each had assists.
No. 1 Cactus Shadows ended No. 8 Notre Dame's emotional season, 1-0, thanks to a penalty kick in 62nd minute by Madi Pascale for the Falcons.
A foul in the box was called on Notre Dame Prep and Cactus Shadows capitalized on one of the few scoring opportunities in the game.
A few minutes before the penalty kick Notre Dame's Cadi Naquin had a nice look at a goal but Brenna Leech made a fantastic defensive play as she headed the ball off the line, Leech also drew the foul that led to the penalty kick.
Cactus Shadows will face Raymond Kellis in the Div. II semifinals on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Paradise Valley High School.
Notre Dame ends its season at 18-6 overall, while dealing with the departure and passing away of former coach Scot Bemis.
In other Div. II action, No. 10 Arcadia continued its run with a physical, emotionally-charged 3-2 win over No. 15 Tucson Sabino.
Sabino struck first in the first five minutes of the match, and while both teams continued to have chances, nothing budged until eight minutes remained in regulation. Kate Staudenmaier nailed a free kick from 30 yards out to the match at 1-1 and force overtime.
The Titans scored twice in a three-minute span late in the first OT session. A transition play allowed a run for Tianna Stewart, who threaded a perfect pass to Grace Kim for a 2-1 lead.
A couple minutes later, Kim knocked in a rebound off a Staudenmaier blast that hit the crossbar. Sabino pulled within 3-2 in the second overtime but the Titans held on in the final four minutes.
Jenny Lewis also shined on defense for Arcadia in the match, which was physical and foul-filled for both teams.
The Titans will face No. 3 Tucson Catalina Foothills on Thursday at 5 p.m. at Paradise Valle H.S. in the semifinals.
Elsewhere ... No. 4 Glendale Raymond Kellis beat No. 5 Glendale Apollo 2-1. And No. 3 Tucson Catalina Foothills beat No. 6 Tucson Ironwood Ridge 2-1 in overtime, in a shootout.
No. 6 Higley fell at No. 3 Buckeye Verrado, 3-0. Adrianna Orozco scored the second Viper goal of the game with 31 minutes left and then added another via penalty kick late in the match to seal the win. The Knights finish the season with a 17-3 record.
In other Division III matches....No. 2 Campo Verde was upset at home by No. 7 Goodyear Estrella Foothills 2-0. No. 4 Seton Catholic beat No. 5 Cottonwood Mingus, 1-0. The Sentinels will now face No. 1 Tucson Palo Verde in the semifinals on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Arcadia High School. Palo Verde beat No. 8 Phoenix Cortez 1-0.
