Janel Brinkman had 16 points and 10 rebounds as top-seeded Tempe Prep used a strong second half to knock off No. 6 Joseph City, 46-38, to claim the Division IV girls basketball crown on Saturday at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.
The teams were tied at 18 after two quarters, but Tempe Prep took a three-point lead into the fourth and outscored Joseph City by five in the final stanza to claim the victory.
It is the first state championship for the girls basketball program in school history.
Camille Zimmerman added 16 points, nine rebounds and four steals. Twelve of her points came in the second half.
Tempe Prep went 30-5 on the year and ended the season on a seven-game winning streak.
