Almost perfect. That was Scottsdale Chaparral quarterback Spencer Stone on Friday night.
The junior threw three second-half touchdown passes to lead the Firebirds to a 42-11 4A Division I Desert Sky Region victory over Phoenix Shadow Mountain.
Stone completed 16 of 19 passes for 179 yards and threw touchdown passes of 5 yards to Tyler Williams and Matt Peterson. He also had a 20-yard scoring pass to Brandon Martin. Two of Stone’s incomplete passes came late in the first half when the Firebirds were trying to get one last score before halftime. They got it, but it was on the ground, not through the air.
The Matadors (3-5, 1-4) gave little opposition to the Chaparral offense, which moved the football at will, both on the ground and in the air. The Firebirds, led by Deveron Carr, had 245 yards rushing.
Carr was sensational, particularly in the first half when he scored touchdowns on runs of 2, 11, and 47 yards. The last of those came on the final play of the first half. With 2.5 seconds on the clock, it was a simple draw play with Carr breaking a couple of tackles at the line of scrimmage and then racing to the end zone for a touchdown. He finished the game with 135 yards on 11 carries.
The Firebirds (7-1, 3-1) bounced back after last week’s 31-28 loss to rival Scottsdale Saguaro. They had little to worry about concerning the Matadors even though it was Shadow Mountain’s homecoming.
