Prep Highlights: Xavier hands Basha 1st softball loss

Phoenix Xavier's Stephanie Janes pitched six shutout innings and finished with a six-hitter as the 5A-I fourth-ranked Gators dealt second-ranked Chandler Basha its first softball loss of the season, 3-2, on Saturday on the first day of the McClintock-Marcos de Niza Tournament at McClintock High School.

Janes fanned the first six batters, had two hits along with twin sister Natalie Janes, and took a no-hitter to the fifth inning. Natalie Janes and Mel Aphayrath each drove in runs for Xavier (10-1).

Basha won later in the day, 10-8 over Chandler High in nine innings, and is 14-1 on the season.

Against Xavier, Basha scored on a seventh-inning, two-run homer by Jackie Zozoya, who led her team with two hits.


In other McClintock-Marcos de Niza Tournament games, Mountain Pointe won a pair of contests at Marcos.

The Pride (10-4) beat Apache Junction 8-1. Danielle Muniz went 2-for-3 with two triples as the Pride scored all eight runs in the first three innings. Mountain Pointe followed with a 15-4 victory over host Marcos de Niza in five innings. The Pride scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning against the Padres. Muniz stepped up again with a 2-for-3 effort with a double and a triple.

Chandler cruised to an 11-4 victory over LaJoya. Alexis Leonard earned her third win for the Wolves. Monica Monteil went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs.


Seton Catholic won twice in the Seton Catholic Invitational. The Sentinels defeated Martin (Texas) 11-0 in six innings and Bourgade Catholic 9-5. Stephen Matta earned his first win of the year, striking out 10 and walking two in the victory over Martin. Tommy Elkins went 2-for-3 with a double, home run and four RBIs for Seton Catholic (3-8). Ryan Herrigan (1-2) earned the win over Bourgade Catholic.

Dobson used a broken-up double play to defeat visiting Sierra Vista Buena 3-2. Justin Ling broke up the double play attempt in the fifth inning that allowed Kevin Behnke to score from third. Cebi Meraz pitched a complete game to earn his second win of the season. After allowing a single and home run in the first inning, Meraz allowed just one hit the rest of the way. Chris Hall went 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Mustangs (4-4).

Mountain Pointe scored four runs in the seventh inning to break a 4-4 tie and defeat host McClintock 8-4 in the McClintock-Saguaro High School Spring Tournament. Jake Waldren drove in Ross O'Callaghan from third on a groundout to score the go-ahead run for the Pride.

C.J. Cron, Derek McCawley and Eric Klem each went 3-for-4 for the Pride. Klem knocked in two runs and Cron and McCawley each drove in one. Jordan Madison pitched the sixth and seventh innings for Mountain Pointe, striking out three to earn his second win of the season.

Visiting Chaparral routed Cactus Shadows 20-1 in a 4A-I Desert Sky Region game. Matt Summer got his second win of the season against no losses for the Firebirds (8-1, 2-0). Royce Bolinger had five RBIs and Trey Ford scored three runs as part of a 19-hit blitz by Chaparral.

Valley Christian defeated Northwest Christian 7-2 in the title game of the Shamrock Classic at Yuma Catholic High School. Sam Moore struck out 10 batters on his way to throwing a complete game for his third win. Moore also went 3-for-3. Dallas Moorhead and Ryan Becker each added two hits and one RBI.

The win gave the Trojans the Shamrock Classic championship for the second year in a row. Earlier in the day, Valley Christian defeated Parker 9-3 in the semifinals to advance to the championship game.
