Gilbert pounded out 17 hits Monday afternoon in support of the seven-hit pitching of Kori Bowser in an 11-1 rout of Desert Vista in the second round of the 5A state softball tournament at Gilbert High.
Becca Quinones led Gilbert with four hits and Alyssa Goldsmith added three as the Tigers advanced to Wednesday’s quarterfinals at Rose Mofford Park at a time to be determined.
Gilbert (25-9) will face Desert Valley Region top seed Desert Mountain.
Kayla Nilsson, Goldsmith, Christine Thomas and Marie Thompson drove in a run each in a four-run sixth that ended the game because of the 10-run rule.
Gilbert was also aided by five Desert Vista (17-18) errors, which kept the Thunder in the field too much on a hot afternoon.
DESERT MOUNTAIN 6, GLENDALE IRONWOOD 3: Stefanie Ewing hit a two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Wolves a victory over Ironwood. Lauren Kemp pitched a complete game, striking out 10.
TUCSON CANYON DEL ORO 4, DOBSON 0: Jen Menefee went 2-for-3 but the visiting Mustangs fell to Tucson Canyon del Oro in first-round action. Dobson finished the season with the best record in school history for softball at 27-7.
"It’s tough to bring the season to a close, but it was just one of those games, we hit the ball well, but every time they fielded it for an out," Dobson coach Wayne Hill said.
TUCSON SAHUARO 2, CORONA DEL SOL 0: Tucson Sahuaro defeated Corona del Sol. Sahuaro will face Phoenix St. Mary’s on Wednesday.
