Connor Johnson didn't really want to shoot it.

Desert Mountain boys basketball coach Todd Fazio was actually hoping he didn't.

This has been a fairytale week for the Wolves, though, and the magic continued on Friday night.

Johnson, a power forward unaccustomed to shooting from the outside, nailed a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:01 remaining and seventh-seeded Desert Mountain went on to upset No. 3 seed Brophy, 61-52, in the Division I, Section III semifinals at Chaparral.

Johnson hesitated at first, but without a defender near him, pulled the trigger on the shot that ripped through the net and gave Desert Mountain a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

"That three he made was kind of a ‘No, no, no.. good shot' type deal," Fazio said. "That was a big shot for us. We needed it."

The Wolves now move on to face Pinnacle in the sectional championship on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at Chaparral. They knocked off third-ranked Mountain View in the first round of the sectional on Wednesday.

Johnson's 3-pointer broke a 51-51 tie, and Diego Magana followed with another shot from downtown with 1:14 remaining to push the lead to six points. Brophy wouldn't get closer than five points the rest of the way.

Desert Mountain entered sectionals on the state tournament bubble but is now in comfortably and continues to make a move up the standings. The Wolves were 18th in the power points heading into the contest and should be higher after the victory.

"We don't get caught up in the power point stuff," Fazio said. "We just try to play well and then let everything take care of itself."

Johnson had 13 points and Austin Cooke added 12. Tim Kempton led all scorers with 21 points for the Broncos, who had leads after the first quarter and at the half but couldn't hold on.
