To the surprise of few, Tucson Salpointe Catholic won a second consecutive Division II girls golf state championship in a runaway on Saturday at Silver Bell Golf Course in Tucson.
The Lancers, heavy favorites by many coaches to win, did just that. Their two-day total of 303-296-599 gave them the championship.
Cactus Shadows came home in second place with a total of 329-334-663, followed in uber-narrow fashion by Notre Dame in third with a 333-331-664.
Scottsdale Christian took sixth place as the young Eagles shot a 336-335-671 for the two-day tournament.
Krystal Quihuis of Salpointe Catholic was the individual state champion with rounds of 66-71-137. She held a five-shot lead over Canyon del Oro's Morgan Messick after day one, as Messick wound up with a 71-70-141 total for second place.
Cactus Shadows' Abbie Cantwell was part of a three-way tie for third place with a 148 (73-75). The next highest East Valley finisher was Campo Verde's Kim Cifuentes, who fired a 78-76-154 to tie for eighth place.
Sarah Eversman led Notre Dame with a 77-81-158 as four Saints all finished in the top 30. Ashley Lonergan was SCA's highest finisher at 82-76-158.
