Tempe Prep is bouncing back after losing its first three games to teams with a combined record of 11-3 (including unbeaten Phoenix Northwest Christian).

The Knights took another big step as they blanked Valley Christian, 42-0, on Saturday night at Arizona Lutheran Academy in Phoenix.

Tempe Prep has posted consecutive shutouts and outscored its foes 105-0 in the last two games. The Knights' defense shut down the Trojans (2-3), who also put up 63 points the week before.

"We challenged our kids on defense and they came out and got it done with four interceptions, our defensive coordinator James Atkinson has been with us ten years and had a great game plan that the kids followed," Tempe Prep coach Thomas Brittain said.

Tempe Prep (2-3) also dominated with its rushing game which racked up 296 yards. On the opening drive of the game, the set the tone when the Knights pounded the ball on the ground and chewed up 9 minutes, 37 seconds of clock.

Tempe Prep faced 4th-and-goal at the 4 when sophomore Issiah Brittain hit paydirt with 2:23 left in the opening quarter. It was the first of three touchdowns, as he also scored on runs of 1 and 4 yards.

"That was key to get the lead or doubt may have crept in," Brittain said. "We are trying to get better every week and show teams in the playoffs. "We showed that our running game is also a strength and the offensive line opened up some great holes."

The Knights struck again with 1:02 left in the first quarter when Jonah Simminger picked off a pass and took it 33 yards to the house. In the second quarter Daniel Hiser had a 20-yard punt return to the Trojans' 43. Issiah Brittain again came up big in short yardage for the score. Akiu, then busted off his big TD run as Tempe Prep padded its lead to 28-0 at halftime.

In the third quarter Akiu had a key first down run to keep the drive alive that was capped off by a yard Issiah Brittain run. With 9:47 left in the fourth quarter Getamesay Wiese romped 44 yards for a touchdown. Wiese drilled the PAT kick (6 of 6) to start the running clock the rest of the game.

"Our offensive line has improved and makes us running backs even better," said Alex Akiu, who rushed for 109 yards on 14 carries, including a 43-yard touchdown run. "We are not looking back at the start to the season, but just keep getting better."

Gabriel LeBeau intercepted a Trojans pass with 5:45 left in the game to preserve the shutout for the Knights. Brittain saw his team play nearly error free, the chance for the first game where his team went without a penalty lasted until a flag in the latter stages of the game.

"(Tempe Prep) controlled the line of scrimmage, took the opening kickoff and went on a long drive for a score and it was just a good old-fashioned butt kicking," Valley Christian coach Jeff Rutledge said. "I care and love these kids, you learn life lessons in sports and we need to check ourselves and come back strong."
