If the saying "defense wins championships" is true then Desert Vista took a step forward as it goes for a second straight Division l state championship.

The Thunder recorded their second shutout of the season as they blanked Dobson 49-0 to celebrate homecoming Friday night.

"We are a firm believer in that (defense wins championships)," Desert Vista coach Dan Hinds said. "Now is the time to step up. Our backers (linebackers Aaron Green, Matt Trujillo and Logan Fetters) all played very well."

Green has really developed into one of the top defensive leaders after coming off the bench in Week 1.

"We believe defense wins championships, we have a lot of pride in our defense," Green said. "It is a good time to come together. We feel we can get four or more shutouts and Chandler and the playoffs are the time to do it.

"We came close a few times and didn't get a shutout, I am happy for the guys (the second string) who kept the shutout at the end."

On the offensive side, the Thunder had no problem as usual putting up the points as they led 28-0 at halftime and rolled to the win.

Jarek Hilgers (59 yards on nine rushes) had his teammates set him up for three touchdowns on short runs of 3, 2 and 6 yards.

Kaleb Germinaro had 118 yards rushing on just six carries. Germinaro had a pair of touchdowns runs of 38 and 11 yards.

"We really used the fly to get it going early," said Germinaro, who was surprised that he went over the 100-yard mark. "From the first to the third team, we had a team effort and the defense played well and they love to get shutouts.

"Everybody has figured out what their niche is."

Chandler Dowell (who was named Homecoming King at halftime) took the short kick to open the game and returned it to the Thunder 48-yard line.

Matt Young hit Zach Gonzalez for a 23-yard pass and the 62-yard, six-play drive was capped off by a 14-yard pass from Young to Nick Farina.

Young had eight completions (8 of 13 for 95 yards) all to different receivers before he exited midway through the third quarter.

The Thunder later in the opening quarter faced fourth-and-a foot at the 3-yard line and Hilgers said forget the first down and took it into paydirt for a 14-0 lead.

DV added a pair of touchdowns 16 seconds apart midway through the second quarter to lead 28-0 at intermission.

Germinaro raced 38 yards for a touchdown. Then Farina returned an interception 20 to the Mustangs' 2-yard line before Hilgers capped it off on the next play.

In the third quarter, Germinaro perfected the "fly" as he went 52 yards and two plays did the scored the touchdown on a 11-yard run.

Later in the third quarter Anthony Abbadessa returned a punt 65 yards to the Dobson 6-yard line where Hilgers did the scoring honors.

Backup quarterback Vince Monaco hit Jason King for a 19-yard reception before King then finished the scoring with a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter and a running clock.

Garrison Schwartz was good on all six of his PAT kicks.

Mustangs quarterback Gabe Martinez aired it out with 31 passes, connecting on 15 for 178 yards. Martinez and the Mustangs drove to the Thunder 7-yard late in the fourth quarter. However, they had a turnover with a fumble on the next play as Desert Vista preserved the shutout.

"We played well, it's the time of the year to to start cranking things up," Hinds said. "I was happy we cut down on mistakes with no turnovers and fewer penalties."

Desert Vista plays at Chandler next Friday in a Division l regular season finale. Both teams are 7-2.

Dobson (1-8) finishes at home with 2-7 Gilbert next Friday.

"It will be great for the kids if we can win to end the year, they have done some great things all year, small victories, it will be nice to have a payoff at the end," Dobson coach George De La Torre said. "The kids deserve it, they played hard tonight, we were just playing a great team in Desert Vista."
