Roundup 01/30: Desert Mountain win creates 3-way tie

The Desert Mountain High School boys soccer team used goals from Brad Matush and Robert Griffen to down host Marcos de Niza, 2-1, in 5A Central Region action Thursday. Stephen Gloria scored the lone goal for the Padres (2-5 region).

The Wolves' win creates a three-way tie between Desert Mountain, Marcos and Desert Vista for the Central Region's third seed to the state tournament.

The three teams will compete in a playoff for the spot at 10 a.m. Saturday at Corona del Sol.

BOYS SOCCER

CORONA DEL SOL 6, DESERT VISTA 1:Dave Oberholtzer scored three goals to carry the visiting Aztecs (14-3-1, 7-1) past the Thunder in 5A Central action. Teammates Matt Webb, Ahkil Jackson and Anson Cain each scored a goal as Ben Christensen, Jason Browne and Eric Reingen had assists. Andrew Schmitt scored for Desert Vista.

Corona, tied for first place with Mountain Pointe in the 5A Central, will play the tiebreaker at 10 a.m. Saturday at Marcos de Niza.

GILBERT 3, HIGHLAND 0:Jake O'Haver, Gary Jones and Jake Humbert each scored a goal to lift the host Tigers (13-5) over the Hawks (9-5-3) in a 5A Fiesta playoff match. Chris Francis, Dan Wallace and Martin Garcia had assists. Goalkeeper Mike Braunstein gained his eighth shutout of the season.

HORIZON 4, PHOENIX NORTH CANYON 0:Jason Allin led the Huskies to a shutout victory with two goals against the Rattlers in a 5A Desert Valley semifinal. Tim Jones and Conor Spence scored host Horizon's other two goals.

PHOENIX BROPHY 2, PHOENIX SHADOW MOUNTAIN 1: The Broncos defeated the Matadors in a 5A Desert Valley semifinal at Horizon. Brophy will play Horizon for the regional title.

GIRLS SOCCER

HAMILTON 2, HIGHLAND 1: Sara Hughes scored two goals to lead the visiting Huskies (12-8) over the Hawks in a 5A Fiesta matchup. Hughes was assisted by Mary Jo Rana for the first goal and Crystal Cappuchio with three minutes left in the game for the second.

Natalie Zenuck scored for Highland.

DESERT MOUNTAIN 6, MARCOS DE NIZA 0: Haley Hart led the host Wolves (15-4-1) with three goals against the Padres (2-14-0) in the Fiesta Region championship. Jen Dittburner, Heather Ginn and Erin Hawkes also scored for the Wolves. Liz Herber recorded her 11th shutout.

DESERT VISTA 3, CORONA DEL SOL 1: Ashley Murry had a goal and an assist to lead the visiting Thunder (14-4-1, 6-1-1) to victory in the 5A Central tournament. Amanda Collins scored an unassisted goal and a Corona defender knocked in the final goal for Desert Vista.

Corona's Ashley Hale also scored.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

QUEEN CREEK 62, HIGLEY 22: Bianca Dorame led the host Bulldogs (13-10, 7-5) over the Knights (1-19) with 11 points, four steals and three assists in a 3A South Region game.
