The Seton Catholic boys soccer team reached the 1A-3A state championship game with a 4-1 win Thursday over visiting Rio Rico.

The Sentinels (15-4-1), who last reached the finals in 2001, will take on Yuma Catholic in the title game at 4 p.m. Saturday at Canyon State Academy in Queen Creek.

Seton broke a 1-1 halftime tie early in the second half on a goal by Carl Agudo off an assist by John Tobin. Then with just under 10 minutes to play, Seton’s Kyle Wilkinson was awarded a penalty kick. Wilkinson’s initial kick was stopped by the Rio Rico goalie, but Wilkinson pounced on the rebound and netted a goal. Luis Badilla tacked on the final goal with three minutes to play off an assist from A.J. Kirch, who scored Seton’s first-half goal.

HIGLEY 2, PHOENIX COUNTRY DAY 1: The visiting Knights defeated the Eagles in a 2A-3A semifinal match. Pam Richardson had a goal and assist for Higley, and teammate Danica Webb also had a goal.

The Knights advance to the first state championship game in school history. They play Seton Catholic at 2 p.m. Saturday in the finals at Canyon State Academy.

SETON CATHOLIC 3, TEMPE PREP 0: Amanda Wessel’s two goals clinched the victory for the host Sentinels in the 2A-3A semifinals. Katie Blomberg also scored for Seton and teammate Kristina Slaton had two assists.
