TUCSON – The reputation remains intact.
Another Flowing Wells Invitational is in the books after Saturday’s finals and nothing happened to change the long prevailing thought that it is the toughest tournament in Arizona.
State champions lost in the semifinals, high seeds found themselves battling back from the consolation rounds and state placers never found the podium.
The 14 individual champions earned the Caballero, one of the best looking trophies around, but very few did so without being challenged throughout the two-day event.
“It’s a tough tournament,” Seton Catholic freshman Quentin Hovis said after winning the 120-pound title. “Everyone says that and it was a battle.”
Hovis beat Chandler’s Quincy Reece 5-2 for the title on the strength of a four-point move off a scramble in the first period to be named Outstanding Wrestler
“We’ve wrestled a couple of times so we knew what to expect,” Hovis said. “Once you have those points you can build on it. I just kept wrestling and rolled through it (for the initial takedown).”
It was one of four all Southeast Valley title matches as Mesa Mountain View’s Mason Paden (113) won by default over Desert Vista’s Alex Carrillio, Chandler’s Estevan Ulibarri beat the Thunder’s Nico Campbell 10-3 for the 138-pound title and Dajour Reece held off Mesa Mountain View’s Blake Monty, 3-2, to stay undefeated at 152.
Reece was a state runner-up last year when he lost to Chandler’s Dalton Brady and now the former is wrestling for the Wolves.
“I needed a program that was going to push me,” said Reece, who sat out 10 days after moving in from Cesar Chavez. “(Practice partner Ulibarri) and I go hard every day. We push each other every day. I just need to stay humble and work hard in practice.”
The other area champion was Desert Vista’s Tristan Ezell, who lost in the semifinals the previous two years, by beating Centennial’s Lewis Arendall, who had won the previous two meetings in their careers including a pin last week at Peoria.
“When I get rid of the demons in my head I can do anything,” said Ezell, who won 9-5 for the 220-pound title.
Mountain View continued its impressive run by winning its first Flowing Wells title as all 14 wrestlers scored points to hold off Sunnyside 223.5 to 208.5. Cibola (190.50), Corona de Sol (176.5) and Ironwood Ridge (161) round out the top five.
Desert Vista (146) and Chandler (142.5) were sixth and seventh.
The Toros had four finalists with only Mason (113) coming away with the coveted Caballero when he won after Desert Vista’s Alex Carrillo couldn’t continue after they bonked heads.
“Ever since Reno he has really turned it on,” Mountain View coach Bob Callison said. “He’s been fundamentally strong and doesn’t make too many mistakes.”
The Toros lost three other finals as Blake Monty (152), Kieffer Taylor (170) and Alexis Garcia (HVY) finished second.
“We got things to work on,” Callison said. “It helps us coach because they will be motivated once we get back in the room.”
The Toros made the two hour trip in the charter bus back up the I-10 with the biggest trophy given away on Saturday.
“It’s huge,” Callison said. “I think it’s only the third time a Phoenix area team won it. We’ve been close but this is a special team we have and we are trying to enjoy it.”
